New Smash Smash app for macOS lets users destroy their desktop for fun

You may recall back in January when we showed you a preview of an upcoming app from Festivitas developer Simon Støvring called Smash Smash that could provide endless entertainment to Mac users by letting them ‘smash’ their desktop with a virtual hammer, and now, Smash Smash is officially available for everyone.
Since first being unveiled, Smash Smash has added a slew of new features, including the ability to scorch your desktop with a flamethrower, fire shots with a minigun, zap windows with a raygun, chop away with a chainsaw, or drop a wrecking ball to completely obliterate everything. You can then use a squeegee tool to reset the madness after all the entertainment.
Upon launching the app for the first time, you’ll find the following interface, which lets you choose which tool you’ll use for whatever mayhem to want to unleash on your Mac:
You can switch between tools, your mouse, and the squeegee tool on demand, allowing you to deal combined tool damages to your screen before ultimately resetting it back to a non-damaged state. Don’t worry – this won’t actually cause damage to your display; all damages are purely aesthetic for your amusement.
There are three buttons in the Smash Smash interface apart from the obvious tool buttons, including a close button to exit the app, a rotation button to turn the tool picker vertical instead of horizontal, and a settings button where you can enable automatic app updates and choose the sound effect volume.
As you might come to expect, the sound effects work together with the destructive tool you select, so it adds to the user experience to make sure you have your volume turned up.
“Smash Smash is inspired by the classic Desktop Destroyer, a beloved relic from the early 2000s,” Støvring tells us. “I built it as a personal project to bring back that sense of playful chaos, re-imagined for modern macOS. This is not a clone or port, but a completely fresh take designed specifically for today’s Macs.”
For those wanting to give Smash Smash a try, you can purchase a copy of your own from the app’s Gumroad page for approximately $4.54. You can also pay more, if you wish, to support the developer. Future updates to the app will be free to download.
We think that Smash Smash could be an excellent stress reliever during a hard day at work on your Mac, or otherwise just a fun way to entertain the kids or show off to friends. No matter how you use it, it’s sure to garner some attention.
