iOS 18.4 and other recent software updates brought new emoji, including a face with bags under the eyes, to the iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices.

The new emoji are available on the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch with the latest operating system updates—iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4 and watchOS 11.4—that Apple released on March 31, 2025.

To use the new emoticons on your iPhone or iPad, switch to the built-in emoji keyboard by touching the emoji key on the onscreen keyboard. If your iPad uses an external keyboard, press the Globe key on the connected keyboard.

On a Mac, press the Function key twice to bring up the emoji picker. If that doesn’t work, go to System Settings> General > Keyboard, then click the menu next to “Press fn key to” and choose the “Show Emoji & Symbols” option.

iOS 18.4 brings seven new emoji characters

The following emoji are available:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Fingerprint
  • Leafless tree
  • Root vegetable
  • Harp
  • Shovel
  • Splatter

The emoji keyboard on the iPhone and iPad and the emoji picker on the Mac sport a search field for quickly finding any emoji character by name; use the emoji search function to find and use the new emoji by their names listed above. Aside from these brand-new emoticons, iOS 18.4 and other updates include new skin-tone variants and family emoji combinations as part of the Unicode 16 standard.

The Unicode Consortium drafted these new emoji in May 2024. The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization that oversees the development of the Unicode Standard, which specifies how text is represented in software products.

Keep in mind that other people must have the aforementioned updates installed on their devices in order to see the new emoji in messages you send. Emoji are platform-agnostic; they can be exchanged freely between, say, iPhone and Android users. However, they may slightly differ visually because companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft and others implement emoji characters in their brand style.
