Just this week, CalDigit announced its next-generation Thunderbolt hubs featuring support for Thunderbolt 5 – the fastest and most capable iteration of Thunderbolt to date, featuring 80Gb/s of bi-directional bandwidth and 120Gb/s of ordinary bandwidth with Bandwidth Boost. CalDigit calls its latest docks the TS5 and TS5 Plus.

CalDigit TS5

Between the two, the TS5 is the more compact model. It features 15 ports and can provide up to 140W of Power Delivery to its host device, whether that’s a notebook like the MacBook Pro or a smaller desktop like the Mac Studio.

With up to 120Gb/s of bandwidth, you can do more than ever before with the CalDigit TS5. It features the following I/O for any connected device:

  • 3x Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 (downstream 15W) ports
  • 1x Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 (host 140W) port
  • 2x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (7.5W) port
  • 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (20W) port
  • 1x USB-A 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (7.5W) port
  • 1x USB-A 2.0 (480Mb/s) 1.5A (7.5W) port
  • 1x 3.5mm Audio Combo Jack port
  • 1x 3.5mm Speaker port
  • 1x 3.5mm Microphone port
  • 1x 2.5GbE Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 1x microSD UHS-II memory card slot
  • 1x SD UHS-II memory card slot

CalDigit says that the TS5 supports up to three external displays on Windows, but due to limitations on Mac computers, TS5 will support up to two displays on macOS. Certain Macs, including M1/M2/M3-based Macs are limited to one external monitor, while all other Macs (including Intel-based machines) can use up to two.

Compared to the previous-generation TS4 dock, which only offered 98W of Power Delivery to the host machine, the new TS5 can keep up with even the native power brick of the maxed out 16-inch MacBook Pro, making it an ample replacement.

Moreover, TS5 is capable up moving up to 6,200MB/s to external storage devices thanks to the 64Gb/s PCIe performance of its Thunderbolt 5 ports, which is twice that of the previous generation TS4 at just 32Gb/s. This makes the TS5 a serious upgrade over the previous-generation CalDigit dock.

CalDigit says the TS5 will be available in late May of this year, and it will retail for $369.99.

CalDigit TS5 Plus

The TS5 Plus, on the other hand, is the beefier of the two new CalDigit Thunderbolt 5 docks. Up from the TS5’s 15 ports, the TS5 Plus features 20 ports and can provide up to 140W of Power Delivery to its host device.

The TS5 Plus features the following I/O for serious professionals:

  • 2x Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 (downstream 36W) ports
  • 1x Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 (host 140W) port
  • 4x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (7.5W) ports
  • 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (36W) port
  • 5x USB-A 3.2 Gen2 (10Gb/s) 1.5A (7.5W) ports
  • 1x 3.5mm Audio Combo Jack port
  • 1x 3.5mm Speaker port
  • 1x 3.5mm Microphone port
  • 1x 10GbE Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 1x microSD UHS-II memory card slot
  • 1x SD UHS-II memory card slot
  • 1x DisplayPort 2.1 port

CalDigit says that the TS5 Plus supports up to three external displays on Windows, but due to limitations on Mac computers, TS5 Plus will support up to two displays on macOS. Certain Macs, including M1/M2/M3-based Macs are limited to one external monitor, while all other Macs (including Intel-based machines) can use up to two.

TS5 Plus has a few improvements up its sleeve that TS5 doesn’t have, including the DisplayPort 2.1 port, the upgraded 10GbE Gigabit Ethernet port, twice as many 10Gb/s USB controllers for additional bandwidth and ports, and more powering capacity for connected devices.

If your workflow demands the highest-performing wired internet connection, several storage drive accessories, support for DisplayPort, and more charging capacity, then the TS5 Plus might be your best friend.

DalDigit says the TS5 Plus will be available in late April of this year, and it will retail for $499.99.

Apart from their impressive I/O options, the TS5 and TS5 Plus are derived from a line of docking stations that are known for being ultra-compact, yet powerful and durable. The TS5 Plus’ darkened aluminum design helps it stand out from the raw aluminum TS5, helping it stand out as the more professional option.
