YouTube’s Premium Lite plan brings ad-free videos to subscribers for $7.99 without bells whistles of Premium

In a blog post shared on Wednesday, YouTube announced a more affordable Premium plan that’s expected to garner a lot of support from users who want a more cost-effective way to watch their favorite content online without the hassle of back-to-back ad playback.
YouTube Premium Lite, which costs $7.99 per month, is now available to consumers in the United States and will soon be rolling out to other pilot countries. At nearly half the cost of YouTube’s full-fledged $13.99 Premium plan, Premium Lite offers ad-free viewing for “most,” but not all videos, including those associated with gaming, fashion, beauty, news, podcasting, and certain other categories.
The plan does not offer ad-free YouTube Music and music videos like the full-fledged Premium plan does, nor does it allow users to download videos for offline viewing or to enjoy background playback when the YouTube app is backgrounded for multitasking purposes.
While some video viewers sometimes take advantage of background playback when they’re simply listening to the audio of a video as they multitask, this isn’t something that Premium Lite users will be able to do. So if you value this type of feature, then you’re still going to need the full-fledged Premium plan, even if you don’t use YouTube for music services.
Is it a good value? Perhaps, but it depends on what you’re into. YouTube likes to describe Premium Lite as a “core creator content” plan, which strives to cater toward those users who don’t value music playback and who want the uninterrupted ad-free video playback experience.
Premium Lite is an attempt by YouTube to not only provide competitively priced services to a wider swath of people, but also to make the core services more approachable by those who might be on the fence over the monthly costs of Premium.
Since Premium Lite offers ad-free viewing on most videos played on YouTube, it just might be worth taking a closer look at if you’re looking to save some money on your monthly bill or if you feel like you’re paying for extra features you don’t use to the fullest under your existing YouTube plan.
