Siri doesn’t even know what month it is

In yet another example of Siri’s uselessness, a frustrated iPhone owner has noticed that Apple’s assistant doesn’t even know what month it is.
John Gruber points to a Reddit thread where people discuss how Siri cannot answer some of the most basic questions. According to posters, if you invoke Siri and ask “What month is it?,” the assistant will respond with “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.”
I just asked Siri on my iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 18.4 beta the same question and got the same useless response. One poster modified the question to “What month is it currently?” and got the answer, “It is 2025.” I prompted Siri with the same question, but I got the same “I’m sorry, I don’t understand” answer as before.
Siri getting dumber and dumber
It’s no secret that Siri is dumb as a rock, but this just shows that the assistant has reached a new level of uselessness. Interestingly, Siri correctly answers questions about what day it is. Siri has been updated with the latest AI and machine learning advancements, so answering these kinds of basic questions should be trivial. Maybe the day question is hard-coded, and the month one is not. Whatever it is, Siri has been getting dumber instead of smarter in the past year or so., that’s a fact.
I don’t know if that has to do with Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT integration into Siri, or something else, but the fact is that Siri today, in 2025, seems to be struggling to answer very basic questions, and that’s a huge disappointment.
It’s particularly embarrassing that Siri has regressed and gotten much worse at responding to queries regarding smart home appliances. When I ask Siri to turn on the lights, I’m more often than not asked to specify the room. Just figure out the room I’m currently in and do the right thing, for Christ’s sake!
Siri has two brains
Unfortunately, Siri will not get better soon. Apple has admitted that an AI-infused version of the assistant with more personalization has been delayed until 2026. But it could take even longer than that, said Apple reporter Mark Gurman. He learned from his Apple sources that Siri currently has two brains, one that operates the legacy Siri commands like timers and making calls and the other that can tap your data and perform complex actions across apps.
“Before Apple can go full-throttle on development of that Siri, which is supposed to finally work more like ChatGPT and the new Alexa, Apple will need to get the underlying system fixed,” he wrote on Bloomberg. “And that won’t be easy. That’s why people within Apple’s AI division now believe that a true modernized, conversational version of Siri won’t reach consumers until iOS 20 at best in 2027.”
Just for laughs, ask Siri to tell you when the next Friday 13 is. Remember that Siri launched on the iPhone 4S in 2011. Nearly fifteen years later, this is where we are.
