In a teaser shared in the Cowabunga Discord channel over the weekend, Nugget developer LeminLimez said that an upcoming update to Nugget dubbed version 5.0 would introduce animated wallpaper options to iPhones and iPads running iOS & iPadOS 17.0-18.4 beta via the SparseRestore exploit without any jailbreak being required.

But as we learned in yet another teaser just this week, it seems that LeminLimez isn’t stopping there. The developer plans to add full-fledged support for actual video wallpapers (by way of .mov files!) in a subsequent update.

Nugget v5 is currently only available to select beta testers, but it will launch to the general public in time. LeminLimez said that video wallpaper support will not launch in the v5 release, but rather a likely version 5.1 release a while afterward.

Video wallpapers are different from animated wallpapers in that animated wallpapers are dedicated animated loops specifically made to be wallpapers, while video wallpapers are actual video files from your Photo Library that you can use as your wallpaper.

Video wallpapers have the potential to be a lot more battery-hungry than traditional wallpapers, but they’re still a fan-favorite by jailbreakers, who’ve often turned to jailbreak tweaks to achieve these types of capabilities.

We’re carefully tracking the progress of this Nugget update, as it’s setting up to be a popular release. For now, you can follow announcements in real time by joining the Cowabunga Discord channel.
