iPhone 17 Pro could let you record 8K video for the first time

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models are rumored to boost video capabilities with the ability to record video in 8K resolution.

MacRumors passes along a post published on the Weibo-based account Fixed Focus Digital, claiming the iPhone 17 Pro models will be “something to look forward to “as shooting video in the 8K resolution will be “within the user’s grasp.”

All iPhones from the iPhone 6s series released in 2015 onwards can shoot video in 4K resolution. Should this rumor pan out, this year’s iPhone 17 Pros could mark the first time Apple has brought 8K video capture to the masses.

iPhone 17 Pro could let you record 8K video

I think the current hardware can already shoot 8K video, but Apple chose to delay the feature until the iPhone Pros boosted all three rear cameras to 48MP. The iPhone 16 Pros use 48MP main and ultra-wide cameras, but the telephoto camera is still 12MP. An earlier rumor mentioned a 48MP triple-camera system for this year’s iPhone Pro Max. If this rumor proves correct, then the ability to shoot 8K video could be restricted to the flasghip iPhone 17 Pro Max.

At any rate, having all three rear cameras in 48MP would be very helpful for supporting video capture in 8K resolution; an 8K image is about 33 megapixels, meaning the user could switch lenses while shooting 8K video.

A September 2024 report alleged that Apple had tested 8K video recording on the then-unreleased iPhone 16 Pro models, noting it was unclear whether the feature would get enabled. As it turned out, the iPhone 16 lineup came with the same old 4K video capture support. Apple apparently decided not to allow 8K video capture because of hardware limitations in the current triple-lens camera setup.

Several handsets in the Android world, including Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, have 8K video recording capabilities. Google’s Pixel 9 Pro also supports 8K video capture, but that’s AI upscaling, not native 8K capture.

A (rocky) road to 8K

8K, or 8K UHD, is the highest resolution defined in the Rec. 2020 (UHDTV) standard. At 7680 × 4320 pixels, 8K packs four times the pixels of the standard 4K resolution (3840 x 2160), providing much more detail.

However, the 8K standard hasn’t yet been fully adopted. Until recently, the price of TV sets capable of 8K resolution was too high for mass adoption, but that’s starting to change. There aren’t many movies or TV shows in 8K, and there aren’t many live sports in 8K either. Apple has experimented with sports in 8K, but that’s for its 3D video format, dubbed Apple Immersive Video, viewable on its Vision Pro headset.

A much bigger problem is the lack of 8K live broadcast, or any kind of 8K broadcast for that matter. I’m afraid the format won’t see meaningful adoption until people can tune in to their favorite channels and watch them in 8K without issues.
