Apple’s iOS 18.4 software brings the reviews summary feature for Phone apps and games on the App Store, powered by large language models.

iOS and iPadOS 18.4 are currently being tested ahead of public launch in early April. You’ll see a splash screen advertising the feature when you open the App Store for the first time after installing the update. “Read a summary of an app’s customer reviews to quickly discover what people are saying about it,” it reads.

These summaries are generated using large language models that power Apple Intelligence. Summaries are generated by Apple’s servers, meaning you can read them even if your iPhone or iPad does not meet the hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence because reviews are not summarized on-device.

iOS 18.4 brings review summaries to the App Store

“Starting in iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4, people can see a new review summary on your App Store product page to more easily learn about apps and games at a glance,” Apple explains. This feature will launch in beta when iOS 18.4 drops.

The summary appears on app and game pages at the top of the Ratings & Reviews section, and is followed by non-summarized reviews. Only one reviews summary shows up for each app or game. To make it easier to distinguish AI-summarized reviews from non-summarized reviews, the summary is prefixed with “Review Summary” in bold and ends with a label comprising the Apple Intelligence glyph (the same as the glyph for notification summaries on the Lock Screen), followed by a message, saying “Automatically summarized from reviews.”

Apple provided an example summary for an imaginary app, with the wording making it perfectly clear that the user is reading an overall summary of what people who submitted a review liked and disliked about the app or game.

“Users say The Coast is a beautiful, relaxing journey that includes complex but rewarding challenges and a memorable soundtrack. However, some reviews say the game is a bit too short and wish it offered more variety in the gameplay,” it reads.

If there’s a problem with the summary, such as incorrect information, you can can tap and hold it to report a problem, enabling Apple to improve the system over time.

How the App Store reviews summary works

“Starting in iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4, people can see a new review summary on your App Store product page to more easily learn about apps and games at a glance,” Apple announced on its developer website. “Generated using large language models, each summary compiles highlights and key information from individual user reviews into a short paragraph,” the Cupertino company clarified.

Summaries are only available for apps and games “with enough reviews.” The App Store refreshes AI summaries at least once per week. The feature will roll out in stages instead of at once, starting with English.

“As part of a phased rollout, review summaries are currently available in English for a limited number of apps and games on the App Store in the United States,” Apple said. “This feature will expand to all apps with a sufficient number of reviews in additional storefronts and languages over the course of the year.”

iOS 18.4 brings other changes, like the ability to set up a Mac using a nearby iPhone, use visual intelligence on the iPhone 15 Pros, have AI prioritize notifications on the Lock Screen, view recent seraches in Safari, use Apple Intelligence on EU iPhones, show a third row of icons on CarPlay and more.
