Apple should debut vapor chamber cooling on the iPhone 17 Pros

The iPhone 17 Pro could borrow a cutting-edge feature from flagship Android handsets: vapor chamber cooling for better thermal performance.
The Chinese leaker Instant Digital said in a post on Weibo that Apple will equip the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with vapor chamber cooling for sustained peak performance when using demanding apps. “Combined with the A19 Pro’s enhanced thermal management, the devices maintain high performance under heavy load with virtually no throttling,” it reads. Vapor chamber heatsinks are found on some high-end Android phones, like Samsung’s Galaxy S25 and Flip Z.
A separate Weibo post claims the iPhone 17 lineup won’t have a much narrower Dynamic Island than the iPhone 16. The Cupertino company will release the iPhone 17 lineup in September, with a new ultra-thin model replacing the iPhone 17 Plus.
iPhone 17 Pro rumored to use vapor chamber cooling. Here’s how it works.
Vapor chamber cooling is a highly efficient thermal management solution for electronic devices. It uses sealed chambers filled with deionized water, which evaporates when exposed to heat generated by the internal components and chips.
Vapor chamber cooling should address overheating concerns and ensure the A19 Pro chip powering the iPhone 17 Pros doesn’t throttle when playing demanding games and using resource-hungry software like video editing apps. “Combined with the A19 Pro’s enhanced thermal management, the devices maintain high performance under heavy load with virtually no throttling,” said the leaker.
Other sources have previously said that Apple will implement vapor chamber cooling in iPhones, including MyDrivers and industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said in August 2024 that only the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max will get this feature exclusively.
Kuo also said that in 2021, Apple was “aggressively testing” a vapor chamber thermal system for the iPhone 14 Pro. So far, no iPhones have used vapor chamber cooling, so it seems like Apple needed more time to perfect the technology.
