Apple launches new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable with support for upcoming AirPods Max audio upgrades

As part of Apple’s announcement on Monday that the company’s AirPods Max with USB-C would support lossless & ultra-low latency audio with the included USB-C cable starting next month when iOS & iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 launch, the Cupertino-based company has released a new accessory to help make these features usable even on devices equipped with 3.5mm audio jacks.
Welcome the new Apple-branded USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, a dedicated direct cable with no dongles or adapters required. With it, you can connect any USB-C-enabled headphones to any 3.5mm audio jack-equipped device, including Apple’s own AirPods Max with USB-C or Beats Studio Pro.
Since using the upcoming lossless and ultra-low latency audio require the use of a cable connection, this cable will allow AirPods Max with USB-C owners to enjoy the upcoming features on older handsets that don’t have a USB-C port or that have a 3.5mm audio jack handy.
Apple also says that the cable can be used with the audio-out port on airplanes, which can be handy for travelers.
Another tidbit worth mentioning is that the cable is bi-directional, so you can also use it to connect other brands of 3.5mm audio jack-enabled headphones to USB-C-only devices that lack a 3.5mm audio port. This makes it a convenient alternative to using Apple’s USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, which added an extra dangly thing to your cable previously.
Apple’s USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable is made with a braided nylon sheath, rather than rubber, which is a nice touch in terms of quality and durability. Additionally, it measures 1.2m in length, giving users plenty of reach.
Those wanting to acquire one of Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cables can pick one up from the company’s website for $39.00. Yes, it’s a bit expensive for what it is, but you pay for the Apple quality and the guarantee that it unlocks all the new audio upgrades coming to AirPods Max with USB-C next month.
As a quick note, owners of the AirPods Max with Lightning will not have access to the upgrade audio features. Disappointing… we know.
