WhatsApp rolling out chat themes with custom backgrounds and bubble colors
WhatApp is rolling out chat themes to let iPhone and Android owners personalize the background and the color of the chat bubbles.
You could change WhatsApp backgrounds before, but themes bring a wider selection of preset wallpapers. They let you personalize one-on-one chats, group conversations and channels you subscribe to with themes to differentiate between them.
WhatsApp has been testing this feature for some time, and I was included in the test and have had it. It’s now being rolled out to all users in stages instead of at once. “These features are now starting to roll out and will be available globally over the coming weeks,” reads the announcement on the WhatsApp blog.
How to use WhatsApp chat themes
To apply a chat theme, open any conversation in WhatsApp, hit the chat title or contact name at the top, and select the Chat Theme option. On Android, hit the three-dotted menu to change the chat theme. To change the default theme for all chats, select the Settings tab and navigate to Chat > Default Chat Theme.
You can select from more than two dozen ready-made themes, each with its own wallpaper and chat bubble color combination. Alternatively, you can customize the wallpaper and chat bubble color for any theme in the Wallpaper and Chat Color sections.
You can also customize the brightness of each wallpaper in dark mode to reduce eye strain when chatting in the dark. To revert the changes, choose “Reset Theme” from the three-dotted menu at the top-right corner.
There are over 30 new wallpaper options to choose from to make your conversations a bit more personal. You can also make chats unique to you by uploading a background from your camera roll. Importantly, people you’re chatting with don’t see your selected theme. Instead, they see their own theme. If no theme is selected, WhatsApp will use its default green theme.
Other new WhatsApp features
Chat themes require the latest version of WhatsApp. If you’ve turned on automatic downloads for app updates on your iPhone, you’ll eventually get the latest version automatically. Instead of waiting, however, you can simply visit the WhatsApp page on App Store and click the Update button to get the latest version.
The Meta-owned messaging app has been testing several upcoming features, including the ability to add Instagram and other social media links to your WhatsApp profile. The company is also testing support for logging into multiple WhatsApp accounts on a single iPhone. Recently, WhatsApp picked up support for Meta’s single sign-on login and is now available in the Accounts Center alongside Facebook, Instagram and Quest logins.
