Leica has built an iPhone camera grip, called Lux Grip, which is inspired by classic Leica cameras and offered at a premium Leica-like price.

This MagSafe-enabled accessory will set you back a whopping $329, a premium pricing from a premium brand like Leica. In the European Union, it’s €300. You can get a decent point-and-shoot camera for under $30! On the other hand, iPhone photographers shouldn’t complain about the high price given the perks like a mechanical two-stage shutter button.

Plus, both left- and right-handed people can comfortably use this thing, and a tripod thread in the base enables the grip to double as an iPhone stand. However, this expensive accessory only works with the Leica Lux app. At least it’s not nearly as pricey as a one-off Leica camera designed by Apple’s former chief of design, Jony Ive, which fetched more than $1.8 million at Sotheby’s charity auction!

The Lux Grip also features a precise rotary settings dial and a pair of function buttons that can be assigned different functions. “While one button provides quick access to frequently used functions, the easy-to-grip control dial enables the precise selection of camera settings–such as zoom, aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation,” reads the announcement.

if you have an iPhone 16, the Camera Control button can do all that. The grip weighs about 130 grams vs. the iPhone 16 Pro’s 200 grams. It pairs with your iPhone over Bluetooth and charges via USB-C. The built-in battery provides enough charge to snap about 1000 photos. For more information, visit the product page.

Pricing and availability

You can purchase your Lux Grip for $329 from the Leica website and €300 in the European Union (VAT included). If you want a leather pouch for the grip that features a convenient built-in AirTag holder for tracking, that’ll be an extra $50.

The Leica Lux app is a free download from the App Store. Advanced features are locked behind the Leica Lux Pro subscription ($7/month or $70/year). However, if you register on the website, you’ll be treated to a free year of Lux Pro.

After your 12 free months are up, you’ll need to continue your subscription in order to use the grip, how’s that for a lock-in? “The Leica Lux Grip only works in conjunction with the Leica Lux app,” the company notes. “The pre-installed iPhone camera app cannot be operated with the Leica Lux Grip.”
