The latest Apple Health Study will use data collected from people’s iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods to help develop new features.
The company previously ran health studies via the Apple Research app, but those were focused on specific topics, like hearing. The latest study has no specific area of focus. Instead, it will analyze data from research participants in the United States to gain new insights into physical and mental health and explore connections across different areas of health.
The new Apple Health Study is expected to last at least five years and will focus on a wide range of health topics, including activity, aging, cardiovascular and circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstrual health, metabolic health, mobility, neurological health, respiratory health, and sleep.

Among other things, it will explore relationships between various areas of health, such as mental health’s impact on heart rate or how sleep can influence exercise.
The Apple Health Study is designed to explore changes in health and how technology can help identify important insights for future product development. When one aspect of a person’s health changes, their body can emit a signal, either physically or emotionally. Changes in health can affect one or more parts of the body, and others may affect wellbeing overall, so helping to identify these changes earlier can help offer a more proactive approach to health. For example, early detection of a change in hearing health could reduce the risk for cognitive decline.
The company will leverage the results from this virtual study to create new health features for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. “We use these research studies not only to learn but to drive and inform our decisions about what things to add to the product roadmap when we see that there’s science that supports building up this work,” According to Sumbul Desai, Apple’s Vice President of Health.
Apple’s health research has already contributed to new features like hearing health on AirPods Pro 2, the Vitals app on Apple Watch and Walking Steadiness on iPhone.
Unlike traditional health research, Apple’s studies are massive in scope. For example, 2018’s Apple Heart Study analyzed data collected by devices of more than 400,000 participants. It resulted in new Apple Watch features such as early diagnosis of irregular heart rhythms like atrial fibrillation.

The Apple-sponsored study, being conducted in partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate) is open to residents of the United States who are at least 18 years old, own an Apple Watch paired with their iPhone with the Research app installed and have consented to participate in the study, which is currently only available in English.
To get started, launch the Research app on your iPhone, select the Apple Health Study and go through the introduction and consent process. You’ll need to give your permission to collect specific health data and activity. Aside from contributing your data, the study will ask you to complete occasional surveys in the app. Participation in the study is free, and Apple won’t compensate you for participating.
