Seasoned Hackintosh Redditor retrofits fully functional iPhone SE 3 hardware software into a Lumia 1020

You’ve likely heard of the term Hackintosh, which is essentially the term of endearment given to a personal computer that was built to run Windows but instead runs a modified build of Apple’s macOS desktop operating system that makes use of the non-Apple hardware within.
While building Hackintoshes is a popular past time for lots of do-it-yourself enthusiasts, we rarely (if ever) see anything like this on the mobile side of things. That’s what makes one Reddit user’s endeavor, posted about this past week on the /r/hackintosh subreddit, a particularly interesting one.
Determined to build an iOS device running inside of a Lumia 1020 chassis, /u/OceanDepth95028 came up with what they jokingly call the NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE, which is effectively the guts of a third-generation iPhone SE residing in the outer shell and display glass of the Lumia 1020.
According to the post, everything about the iPhone SE 3 retains its stock functionality from within the Lumia 1020 chassis, including 5G cellular capabilities, the A15 Bionic Chip’s processing power, and the 128GB of flash storage.
A few modifications needed to be made to the display to make it work with the Lumia’s. The original iPhone’s screen glass needed to be removed and then re-laminated onto the Lumia 1020 front glass, and because of the size difference, the 3 capacitive buttons that Windows phones are known for needed to be removed. The DIYer even relocated the front camera and earpiece speaker to the proper locations on the Lumia 1020.
On the back of the device, the 41-megapixel camera of the Lumia 1020 had to be removed and replaced with the iPhone SE 3’s 12-megapixel camera. The Touch ID Home Button was relocated to directly below the camera, a spot that would still be accessible with the finger while holding the handset a certain way. Many Android phones used a similar setup. Even the iPhone’s two-tone LED camera flash was transplantable into the long Xenon bar found on the rear of the Lumia 1020.
While the Redditor had to plug up the 3.5mm audio jack due to retrofitting challenges, the SIM card tray on the top functions just like the original on the iPhone did. On the bottom of the device, a fully functional Lightning port disguised as a micro-USB port works for charging and data transfers of the device.
One interesting thing that the Redditor points out is that the Lumia 1020 had a camera shutter button, which makes its way to the iPhone 16 series for the first time. They were able to make it functional with the iPhone SE 3 components such that it can take photos, but it also doubles as a secondary volume down button.
We should add that /u/OceanDepth95028’s NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE runs a native version of iOS 18.3.1, the latest software at the time of this writing, and it can be updated over the air or via Finder on his personal Hackintosh computer.
This is unquestionably an exciting feat, as Apple’s mobile hardware and software tend to be less maneuverable for Hackinosh builds than the brand’s desktop hardware and software. With that in mind, we’d be interested to see if this accomplishment sparks interest in even more users to build such devices as DIY projects.
