Apple’s Beats subsidiary has released the Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds, which feature heart rate monitoring and other significant updates to the sporty earphones.
Powerbeats Pro 2 are the first Apple earbuds (or any Apple audio product, for that matter) with built-in heart rate monitoring., allowing them to track your heartbeats during workouts without an Apple Watch. Each earbud has an optical sensor that uses photoplethysmography, like the Apple Watch’s optical heart rate sensor. The LED lights flash over hundreds of times per second, with light-sensitive photodiodes detecting the amount of blood flowing, which can then be used to calculate the number of heartbeats per minute.
Apple has worked with fitness apps like Ladder, Nike Run Club, Open, Peloton, Runna, Slopes and YaoYao in supporting this feature, enabling the apps to capture your heart rate data as collected by Powerbeats Pro 2. For iPhone owners, heart rate tracking starts automatically when they start a workout and ends when the session ends; Android users, however, must manually turn this feature on in the Beats app.
Powerbeats Pro 2 bring heart rate monitoring to your ear

For Apple Watch owners, the Health app will prioritize heart rate data collected by the watch instead of Powerbeats Pro 2. On top of that, Powerbeats Pro 2 support GymKit to connect the earbuds with compatible gym equipment to sync data.
Another significant update over the previous model is active noise cancellation with transparency modes. Each earbud features three onboard microphones and a voice accelerometer. Powerbeats Pro 2 should sound better than before thanks to redesigned acoustics sporting Apple’s in-house designed dual-layer transducer.
Other audio improvements include voice isolation to reduce background noise for the caller, personalized spatial audio with head tracking and adaptive EQ, which tunes sound in real time based on how the earbuds fit in your ear.

“An inward-facing microphone monitors for sound, and then Adaptive EQ, powered by computational audio, tunes the low and mid frequencies to account for what may be lost due to variances in fit,” as per the Beats by Dr Dre website.
As previously rumored, Powerbeats Pro 2 feature adjustable ear hooks fit that’s much smaller than before. Thanks to a flexible nickel-titanium alloy, the ear hook is more secure and the earbuds are twenty percent lighter than before. Powerbeats Pro 2 ship with five ear tip sizes in the box (XS, S, M, L, XL), one more than before. They bring upgraded venting and support an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance.
Lossless audio and longer battery life

The earbuds use Apple’s H2 chip, which supports Apple’s latest computational audio features while providing perks such as longer battery life, faster device switching, seamless pairing, audio sharing, hands-free Siri, Find My support and more.
Powerbeats Pro 2 are also the second Apple earbuds to support lossless audio on the Vision Pro headset after AirPods Pro 2. Each earbuds sports a tactile volume rocker to quickly adjust the volume, along with a “b” button that can be customized to trigger different functions with single and double presses, such as pausing the track and muting/ending the call.
With active noise cancellation turned off, you get ten hours of playback time, an hour more than before. The 33 percent smaller charging case also allows the earbuds to run for 45 hours before the case needs to be plugged into power. In contrast, the previous Powerbeats Pro had a total battery life of 24 hours.
A quick five-minute charge gives you about 90 minutes of playback. Powerbeats Pro 2 support wired charging via USB-C and for the first time wireless charging via the Qi protocol. For further information, visit the Powerbeats Pro 2 page and read the Powerbeats Pro 2 Quick Start Guide.
Pricing and availability
Powerbeats Pro 2 cost the same $250 in the United States as their predecessor. You can order them via Apple’s online store. They come in the Electric Orange, Hyper Purple, Jet Black and Quick Sand colors, and will be available in retail stores from February 13.
