Leaked case renditions depict plausible redesign of iPhone 17 Pro Max rear camera system

As Apple refreshes the iPhone year-after-year, there’s no shortage of pre-release rumors that strive to guess what direction the company will head with respect to what its latest handset might come equipped with and what it could look like.

While many rumors can be downright bizarre, Sonny Dickson, an Apple leaker with a decent track record for guessing Apple’s upcoming design choices, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share renders of what the updated camera system might look like on the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The renders depict what appears to be a MagSafe-compatible case for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and it has been redesigned to fit what could be the updated camera module and a few of its relocated critical components.

Right off the bat, the renders show the TrueTone LED flash, rear-facing microphone, and LiDAR sensor moved to the right side of the device, while the triple camera system, comprised of a wide lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a telephoto lens, remains in the same place as previous ‘Pro’ handset model years.

Previously, all these components were built directly into the camera bump with the lenses, which suggests that the upcoming handset may incorporate a new camera system in which there isn’t any room for the TrueTone LED flash, rear-facing microphone, and LiDAR sensor to reside in same space as the camera lenses.

The renders seem to corroborate ongoing rumors that Apple could move from a standalone camera module on the top-left of the iPhone’s backplate and move to a larger ‘Camera Bar’ design that takes up the entire top end of the iPhone’s backplate. The only differentiation seems to be the approach to such a concept.

Should Apple adopt such a design, we can only assume it would also apply to the smaller iPhone 17 Pro. It would balance some of the rearward iPhone design elements such that they aren’t all located on one corner of the glass, and it may even help eliminate camera bump rocking when a caseless iPhone gets placed on a table.

Despite Dickson’s track record, we caution that this is merely a rumor and does not pass in any way as a guarantee for what Apple has planned for its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series handsets. It’s not uncommon for case manufacturers to develop prototypes based on unconfirmed rumors, and this could be one such example.

Do you think Apple is on track to redesign the rear-facing camera on the iPhone 17 Pro series devices like the renders shown above? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
