The upcoming release of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 in April will bring Apple Intelligence to iPhone and iPad owners in the European Union (EU).

Following its June 2024 preview, Apple Intelligence has been available in the United States since October 2024. Apple has since expanded the initial set of features with iOS 18.2 and iOS 18.3. However, Apple Intelligence currently does not work for EU residents regardless of their device region or language settings.

Apple had to navigate EU regulations to comply with the interoperability requirements enforced by the Digital Markets Act. But now, the company has confirmed that 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 will bring Apple Intelligence to EU users for the first time. These updates are currently being tested and will launch in April.

“With the upcoming software updates, iPhone and iPad users in the EU will have access to Apple Intelligence features for the first time,” reads the announcement. The wording implies Apple Intelligence won’t launch for EU Mac owners in April.

As previously noted, Apple has reaffirmed that iOS 18.4 supports Apple Intelligence in non-English languages, including French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (simplified). The update will include localized English support for Apple Intelligence users in Singapore and India.

“These new languages will be accessible in nearly all regions around the world with the release of iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 in April,” Apple notes.

Apple Intelligence will also be available for Vision Pro via the visionOS 2.4 update in April. The company will continue to add new features to Apple Intelligence “in the coming months,” including more AI capabilities for Siri.

The press release also touts Apple’s privacy-first approach to AI:

Apple Intelligence marks an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI and is designed to protect users’ privacy at every step. It starts with on-device processing, meaning that many of the models that power Apple Intelligence run entirely on the device. For requests that require access to larger models, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of iPhone into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence.

The company actually provided Apple Intelligence availability information for EU users in a January 27 update to its support page. “In April, many of the core features of Apple Intelligence will start to roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU,” it reads.
