How to use ChatGPT inside WhatsApp on your phone or computer

Learn how to ask questions and get help from ChatGPT directly within WhatsApp on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or computer.
ChatGPT has an official WhatsApp account that allows access to the AI chatbot without using the official ChatGPT app or website. You don’t even need to have an OpenAI account to use ChatGPT in WhatsApp—it’s a lot like how you can use ChatGPT with Siri and other Apple Intelligence tools without having to sign up or log in.
OpenAI says that the knowledge cutoff for using or via direct call is October 2023, so just be aware that you may not get the latest, most updated information.
What you can ask
If you already use ChatGPT in its official app or website, you can ask similar queries on WhatsApp:
- Text: You can ask text-based questions to ChatGPT, kind of like how you message your friends on WhatsApp.
- Image: You can take a picture or upload an existing one from your phone’s gallery. ChatGPT will analyze the image you sent and answer your query related to it.
- Voice: Finally, if you don’t like typing, you can send a voice message to ChatGPT via WhatsApp, and it will understand your audio note and reply accordingly.
Note that will always respond in text, irrespective of how you ask your query.
How to use
It requires just two easy steps:
Step 1: Start a chat
You can do this by saving ChatGPT’s phone number to your iPhone or Android phone, hitting a dedicated chat link, or scanning a QR code.
Save ChatGPT’s number: The official phone number for ChatGPT is 1-800-CHATGPT, that is, 1-800-242-8478. If you save this phone number from outside the United States, make sure to select the US as the country or add the +1 country code.
Start a chat directly in WhatsApp: You can tap the plus button inside WhatsApp and select New contact. Then, select the United States as the country, type ChatGPT’s phone number (1-800-242-8478), and hit Save.
Use this link: Make sure you’re reading this tutorial on your iPhone or Android phone, and tap this direct WhatsApp link to start a chat with ChatGPT.
Scan QR code: Finally, you can simply scan this official ChatGPT QR code using the camera on your iPhone or Android phone and tap the WhatsApp or WhatsApp link button to start a chat with ChatGPT.
Note: You cannot add ChatGPT to your WhatsApp group chat.
Step 2: Ask your query
Once you’re on the conversation screen with ChatGPT, write your messages and hit send. Ask follow-up questions if needed.
You can also attach a picture, and ask questions about it.
Lastly, you can hit the microphone icon and ask your query directly. For best results, make sure to record your message in a quiet environment, as background noise may lead to unhelpful replies.
Note that cannot interact with PDFs at this time.
Use ChatGPT inside WhatsApp on an iPad or computer
As you might have figured out, using is akin to chatting with another person, irrespective of which device you use it on. If you have set up WhatsApp on your iPad or your Mac/Windows PC, you can ask ChatGPT your questions there, as well.
There is a daily limit
OpenAI says that there is a daily limit on how many questions you can ask , but it hasn’t mentioned exactly what that threshold is. However, you’ll be informed when you approach the daily limit and once again when you reach it. After that, you can continue using ChatGPT separately, via its native app or website.
Link your ChatGPT account with WhatsApp
As of the latest update, I can’t find a way to link ChatGPT and WhatsApp accounts, but OpenAI has said that account linking is coming soon, and when that’s available, you should be able to link your free, plus, or pro account so you get the subscription benefits when using ChatGPT within WhatsApp. This will help alleviate pain points like the aforementioned daily limit, give you access to the more advanced models, and more.
Using may feel slow
Compared to WhatsApp, I noticed that the ChatGPT app and website reply faster when I ask the same question. I also observed that in the official ChatGPT app (and website), it displays a little dot, which lets you know that it’s working on your request, but there is no such indicator when using ChatGPT inside WhatsApp. This likely adds to the feeling that WhatsApp queries take longer.
Call ChatGPT using a landline or feature phone
If you’re based in the United States or Canada, you can call ChatGPT at 1-800-CHATGPT or 1-800-242-8478 using any phone and ask your query. OpenAI offers 30 free minutes per month.
