How to mark one or all WhatsApp messages as read or unread

Learn how to mark unread WhatsApp messages as read, and vice versa, on your iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or computer.

Making unimportant texts as read ensures they don’t appear in your face whenever you open WhatsApp. And if you’ve read a message that’s worth revisiting in the future, you can mark it as unread so it shows up among other unread chats.

WhatsApp for Android may surface old and unread messages on the Lock Screen and in the Notification Center; marking them as read prevents that from happening.

Marking a message as read also deceases the red badge counter on WhatsApp’s Home Screen icon and unread count on the Chats tab on iOS and Android.

You can toggle one-on-one conversations and group chats between read or unread. One important thing to remember is that marking a message as unread doesn’t remove read receipt for the sender; they’ll still know you’ve read their message.

Mark a WhatsApp message as read or unread

You can mark a conversation as read if it contains at least one unread message. When you mark a message as read or unread on one device, the change will be reflected on your other devices using the same WhatsApp account.

On iPhone

Swipe right over a WhatsApp conversation in the Chats tab and hit the Read or Unread button. Alternatively, touch and hold the chat and choose the Mark as read or Mark as unread option from the menu.

On Android phone

Touch and hold a WhatsApp conversation in the chat list to select it, then hit the three-dotted icon in the top-right corner and choose Mark as read or Mark as unread.

Mac or PC app

If you use the official WhatsApp desktop app for macOS or Windows, right-click a conversation and choose Mark as read or Mark as unread from the menu.

On iPad and computer web browser

You can also use WhatsApp in a web browser and configure WhatsApp on iPad as a progressive web app (PWA). On either platform, hit the three-dotted button in the top-right corner of the Chats screen, then choose Select chats.

Pick one or more conversations you want to mark as read or unread, tap the three-dotted icon and choose Mark as read or Mark as unread.

Mark multiple WhatsApp messages as read

You can mark all unread WhatsApp messages as read on a smartphone but not on your iPad or the computer. What you cannot do is change all WhatsApp messages from read to unread on any platform.

On iPhone

Open WhatsApp on your iPhone, tap the three-dotted menu in the top-left corner of the Chats screen, and choose Read all. This will mark all unread messages as read.

On Android phone

To mark all WhatsApp messages as read on an Android phone, touch and hold a message until it’s selected, then hit the three-dotted menu and choose Select all. Now tap the menu again and choose Mark as read.

On iPad, Mac, PC, and web browser

The WhatsApp desktop app for Mac and Windows PCs doesn’t support marking multiple messages as read or unread. Those who use WhatsApp in a computer browser or iPad should follow the steps in the earlier section and select multiple conversations (but not all in one go) to mark as read or unread.
