Gurman: Apple’s long-term goal of standalone AR glasses remains intact

Apple hasn’t given up the dream of developing standalone augmented reality (AR) glasses that would work without being tethered to a Mac.
Mark Gurman writes on Bloomberg that Apple’s long-term plan of developing standalone AR glasses hasn’t changed under the leadership of John Ternus.
The Cupertino company, Gurman writes, is still focused on developing such a product even though it has come to the realization that the technology is just not there yet. According to Gurman, standalone AR glasses are at least 3-5 years away.

Ternus, 49, is Apple’s senior vice president of all hardware engineering across the company. He reports directly to Tim Cook and is charged with leading the teams behind the iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods and other hit products. Termus apparently “doesn’t want another flop on his hands” after Apple reportedly canceled a version of AR glasses that would tether to a Mac for processing power.
In any case, it seems like the new boss of Apple’s Vision Products Group, John Ternus, doesn’t want another flop on his hands. So he is going to take his time and be cautious. I’m told that Apple’s long-term goal of standalone AR glasses remains intact, and the company will keep working on underlying technology—like screens and silicon—to help make such a device more feasible.
Meta’s recently introduced AR glasses, called Orion, look pretty compelling, but they’re currently just a $10,000 prototype. True augmented reality spectacles that cram high-performing lenses, longer-lasting batteries, eye tracking sensors, chips and other components into a lightweight device that sits on your nose without feeling heavy remain a pipe dream, for now.
Gurman recently reported that Apple has shut down an AR glass project that would require Mac tethering. “The now-canceled product would have looked like normal glasses but include built-in displays and require a connection to a Mac,” he said.
From my reading of the situation, it sounds like Apple has put aside AR glasses until the technology is ready to make them feasible.
