Apple confirms iPhone 15 Pros will get Visual Intelligence; you’ll trigger it via the Action button or Control Center toggle

The visual intelligence feature of Apple Intelligence will come to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones via a future update to iOS 18.
We assumed visual intelligence was exclusive to the latest iPhone 16 lineup because the iOS 18.3 update that supports the feature has not enabled it on the older iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices, which also run Apple Intelligence.
Apple has now confirmed to John Gruber that visual intelligence is indeed coming to the iPhone 15 Pros “in a future software update.” The update in question is likely iOS 18.4, which will drop in April with support for Apple Intelligence in more languages.
Visual intelligence is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro models
Apple yesterday announced iPhone 16e, a new $600 handset in the iPhone 16 lineup serving as a replacement for the discontinued iPhone SE 3.
To achieve its $200 lower price than the regular iPhone 16 (which starts at $800), iPhone 16e skips on features like the Camera Control capture button which debuted on last year’s iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Visual intelligence is triggered by pressing and holding the Camera Control button. Since there is no Camera Control button on iPhone 16e, Apple has created two new ways to trigger this feature on the latest handset.
How to invoke visual intelligence on iPhone 16e
Firstly, iPhone 16e owners will be able to bind visual intelligence to the Action button in Settings > Action Button. And secondly, the iOS 18 version preinstalled on the handset includes a Control Center widget for invoking visual intelligence. These controls allow iPhone 16e owners who wish to use the Action button for Shazam or another function to instead activate visual intelligence through the Control Center.
The company didn’t clarify whether these new ways to invoke visual intelligence will be unavailable on devices equipped with the Camera Control button—the regular iPhone 16 models and iPhone 16 Pros. For what it’s worth, we think both new controls will be available in addition to the default Camera Control trigger.
