WhatsApp gains AR camera effects, quicker reactions and other perks
Meta has rolled out four new features to WhatsApp for iPhone and Android, including new camera effects comprising 30 backgrounds, filters and AR effects.
The company made the announcement on the official WhatsApp blog. WhatsApp already supports effects, filters and virtual backgrounds during video calls, but now you can apply them to the photos and videos taken with WhatsApp’s built-in camera.
To get these features, get the latest version. If you already have the app installed, visit WhatsApp’s App Store page on your iPhone and hit the Update button. Some of these features may roll out in stages, so check back later if you don’t have them yet.
WhatsApp picks up AR camera effects, selfie stickers, etc.
When taking a photo or video in chats, hit the wand icon in the lower-left corner and swipe between Effects, Filters and Backgrounds alongside the bottom. There are 30 virtual backgrounds and a bunch of filters and effects to choose from. Note that you’ve already been able to use camera effects during video calls.
Another new feature is selfie stickers, which let you turn your selfie into a sticker. However, it is currently available on Android (hit the sticker icon, and you’ll see the camera option to take a selfie and create your sticker) and coming to iOS “soon.”
Don’t confuse it with the existing feature that lets you turn any saved image into a sticker, available by hitting the sticker icon on the rightmost side of the text field at the bottom, selecting the Sticker tab and choosing the Create option
Stickers fans get another new feature. “Spotted a sticker pack you know a friend will love? Now you can share them directly in your chats,” WhatsApp explains.
Lastly, you can react to chats with emojis faster; instead of tapping and holding a chat bubble, double-tap a message to bring up your most-used reactions or add any emoji reaction you like.
The app has gained other enhancements recently, including the ability to scan documents directly with the WhatsApp camera, add the unread count to the WhatsApp icon, and pinch to zoom during video calls.
