The latest HomePod and Apple TV updates bring performance and stability fixes
The tvOS 18.3 update for the Apple TV media player and the HomePod smart speaker brings performance and stability fixes but no new features.
The official release notes for tvOS 18.3 and the HomePod software 18.3 only mention that “this update includes performance and stability improvements.” Apple’s website provides additional information, listing fifteen fixes and patches for vulnerabilities.
tvOS is the operating system that powers both the Apple TV devices and HomePods, although Apple continues to refer to the HomePod version as “HomePod Software.”
HomePod and Apple TV get performance and security fixes
A CoreMedia issue plaguing all Apple TV models enables a malicious app to elevate privileges. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 17.2,” according to Apple’s security page. The problem was addressed “with improved memory management.”
tvOS 18.3 also brings fixes for four issues with the AirPlay feature, a problem with the ARKit framework for augmented reality apps and various issues with the system kernel and libraries like ImageIO, SceneKit, WebKit and more.
To update your Apple TV, choose “Update Software” in Settings > System > Software Updates, then select “Download and Install” if an update is available. The device must be connected and plugged into power for the update to complete.
To update your Siri speaker, open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and hit the … (ellipsis) icon in the top-right corner, then navigate to Home Settings > Software Update.
