Kuo: Dynamic Island isn’t getting a redesign for iPhone 17
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup isn’t expected to feature a redesigned, smaller Dynamic Island area after all, according to a revered Apple analyst.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a post on his X account on Friday that he expected the size of the Dynamic Island area to “remain largely unchanged” across the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models coming down the pike in September 2025.
His claim contradicts earlier rumors calling for a smaller Dynamic Island across the 2025 iPhones. For example, The Information reported in May 2024 that Apple’s rumored ultra-thin iPhone that’s allegedly debuting this fall alongside the iPhone 17 lineup might actually feature a narrower Dynamic Island area.
Dynamic Island not getting a redesign for iPhone 17?
Kuo isn’t the only analyst claiming no change for the Dynamic Island design in 2025. Another analyst, Jeff Pu, said last year that the size of the Dynamic Island area will stay largely the same until Apple adopts a so-called “metalens” for Face ID’s infrared receiver. He thinks Apple might bring this metalens to the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max model this year before rolling out the technology across the whole lineup.
The release of the iPhone X series in 2017 brought a fullscreen design and the infamous notch, a cutout in the OLED panel at the top of the display that houses the Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max debuted a notch successor, dubbed Dynamic Island.
Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped cutout that iOS uses to display various statuses and controls from compatible apps, like timers, stopwatches, AirDrop progress, media controls etc. Third-party apps can provide their own Dynamic Island controls, and Live Activities are displayed in the Dynamic Island area (plus the lockscreen).
Dynamic Island could be coming next to the fourth-generation iPhone SE as the handset is expected to adopt a fullscreen appearance like modern iPhones, dropping Touch ID and the top and bottom bezels. Apple has also expanded Dynamic Island to its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops.
