iOS 18 adoption on pace with comparable iOS 17 statistics last year
The iOS 18 adoption rate numbers roughly match the percentage of iPhones that were running the previous iOS 17 software a year ago.
The latest statistics come from the most reliable source: Apple itself. This morning, the company updated its App Store page with the newest usage numbers for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, “as measured by devices that transacted on the App Store on January 21, 2025.” iOS 18 powers 76 percent of iPhones introduced in the last four years (all models from iPhone 12 onward and the second-generation iPhone SE).
iOS 18 adoption rate on pace with iOS 17 last year
Comparable statistics from twelve months ago showed iOS 17 running on 76 percent of iPhones released in the last four years. So, iOS 18 adoption seems to be on pace with iOS 17 adoption in the prior year. However, iPadOS 18 adoption appears to be picking up steam, with the operating system installed on 63 percent of iPads released in the last four years versus 61 percent a year ago.
Apple’s stats also reveal that 68 percent of all compatible iPhones are running iOS 18, an increase from the 66 percent of all iPhones running iOS 17 a year ago. Among active iPads, 53 percent are currently on iPadOS 18, the same as the percentage of active iPads that were running iPadOS 17 a year ago.
Apple released iOS 17.0 in September 2023 and iOS 18.0 in September 2024. The Cupertino giant has since released three major updates to iOS 18 (iOS 18.3 is launching next week), the same as iOS 17 last year. The company will release iOS 18.4, a fourth major update, in March or early April.
