iOS 18.3 turns on Apple Intelligence by default
Apple Intelligence will be turned on automatically when you update your iPhone, iPad and Mac to iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3.
Apple’s developer documentation notes this is true whether upgrading your current iOS installation to iOS 18.3 or erasing the device and starting anew with iOS 18.3. “For users new or upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding,” the company notes. “Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices,” Apple clarifies.
Apple’s wording makes it difficult to ascertain whether people will have a chance to decide whether or not to turn on Apple Intelligence during the setup process, like it does for Siri, Face ID, Apple Pay and other features.
iOS 18.3 automatically turns on Apple Intelligence
The company adds that iPhone, iPad and Mac owners can turn off Apple Intelligence anytime. “To disable Apple Intelligence, users will need to navigate to the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings pane and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle.” Doing so will disable Apple Intelligence features on the device.
This is an interesting change. In earlier iOS releases, Apple Intelligence needed to be manually turned on and there was a waitlist. Perhaps Apple’s stats show too many people have opted out of Apple Intelligence despite having compatible devices.
Or I could be speculating too much, and Apple will simply put up a big splash screen for Apple Intelligence during the setup process with a small link at the bottom to turn it on manually later, like it does for Siri and other features during onboarding.
What else is new in iOS 18.3?
iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3 bring changes to the Notification Summary feature to better distinguish regular from AI summaries. Apple has temporarily disabled AI notification summaries for news over inaccuracies. The updates revive support for repeating operations in the Calculator app.
The macOS Sequoia 15.3 update will also bring Apple’s AI-assisted emoji generator, called Genmoji, to the Mac platform after the feature landed on the iPhone and iPad with iOS and iPadOS 18.2. However, the redesigned Mail app with AI features will hit Macs (and iPads) alongside iOS 18.4 in March or April.
