Apple Watch Series 4 mid-2019 15-inch MacBook Pro join Apple’s vintage product webpage

Apple just this week updated its vintage products web page with the addition of some iconic older devices to include all makes and models of the Apple Watch Series 4 and the 15-inch MacBook Pro that was released in mid-2019.

The changes to the vintage products web page were first pointed out by MacRumors in a report shared on Thursday, and appear to be related to the New Year, as products typically reach the vintage status approximately five years after their original release date.

What does it mean to be designated as vintage? Well in short, it means that first-party parts availability is on the brink of drying up because Apple isn’t manufacturing them anymore. Both Apple and third-party Authorized Service Providers may continue repairing these devices with first-party parts for as long as those parts are available.

These repair parts may include, but aren’t limited to, replacement screens when a consumer cracks the glass and replacement batteries for when an original power cell won’t hold a charge.

The vintage classification differs from obsolete on Apple’s web page because the latter means that not only does Apple no longer manufacture components for repairs, but also that Apple and third-party Authorized Service Providers can no longer offer repairs for those devices. Instead, users are on their own and must rely on third-party components, which can offer mixed user experiences.

The Apple Watch Series 4 debuted back in 2018 with both aluminum and stainless steel models available in 40mm and 44mm case sizes. It brought with it a major redesign that offered a larger display than its predecessor, and it was particularly well-received by consumers. It’s worth noting that Apple’s latest and greatest watchOS 11 software update didn’t support the Apple Watch Series 4 when it dropped last Fall.

While watchOS 11 also dropped support for the Apple Watch Series 5, it’s worth noting that the Apple Watch Series 5 has not been added to Apple’s vintage products list yet. Perhaps one more year?

As for the mid-2019 15-inch MacBook Pro, this is another particularly noteworthy device, as it was Apple’s last MacBook Pro of the previous design language before switching to the newer 16-inch MacBook Pro design that we have today. These machines featured older Intel processors, which Apple has since phased out for faster and more efficient Apple silicon, such as the M1 chip and newer.

In any case, it’s pretty neat for anyone who owns one of these devices to now be in possession of a vintage device. Now… just handle it carefully, as repair parts may not be as readily available as they once were…
