If you’ve been following along with us every time that we share the news about a new firmware update for any of Apple’s AirPods models, then you’re already aware of how it’s an automatic updating process that occurs when a very specific set of critera are met.

On Apple’s own About firmware updates for AirPods support page has long stated the following:

Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi. You can also use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to check that your AirPods have the latest version.

But just today, Apple updated this support page to reveal some steps that users of Apple’s AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max can take to help the firmware update process along if it seems like you’ve tried everything and the firmware simply isn’t updating.

For AirPods and AirPods Pro firmware updates, Apple recommends the following steps:

1) Make sure that your AirPods are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
2) Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
3) Plug the charging cable into your charging case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
4) Keep the lid of the charging case closed, and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
5) Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
6) Check the firmware version again.

For AirPods Max firmware updates, Apple recommends the following steps instead:

1) Make sure that your AirPods Max are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
2) Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
3) Wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
4) Reconnect your AirPods Max to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
5) Check the firmware version again.

It’s worth noting that these steps don’t guarantee that your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max firmware will update, but it does help set the stage by making sure that the conditions are just right. Of course, if you’re that desperate for a firmware update, you can also bring your device to an Apple Store and have one of the staff help you out.

Most of the time, AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max firmware updates are so negligible that users don’t notice any difference in performance. In fact, only a few recent updates to AirPods Pro 2 firmware have been anything to write home about, as these updates have introduced new features such as Apple’s new Hearing Test and Hearing Aid functionality.

At the time of this writing, the following AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max firmware versions are the latest:
