Apple Maps EV routing will soon support Tesla Superchargers, with a caveat

EV routing on Apple Maps will finally gain support for Tesla Superchargers four years after the feature was officially announced, but only for Ford drivers.

Apple Maps for iPhone launched EV routing in 2020 to recommend charging locations along your route, helping reduce range anxiety and was updated later to support EV routing on CarPlay. However, the feature has very limited availability as it only works for Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning and Porsche’s Taycan.

EV routing in Apple Maps requires a vehicle manufacturer’s app. Apple’s announcement even promised Tesla support, but Tesla’s app still lacks EV routing. Ford’s support page stated, “Apple plans to support Tesla Supercharger at a later date.” Today, the carmaker has confirmed that the wait will soon be over.

Donna Dickson, Ford’s chief engineer for Mustang Mach-E, wrote in a post on the company’s forums that Ford drivers will soon be able to find Tesla Superchargers on Apple Maps, noting that finding compatible Tesla Superchargers for Ford drivers “will be coming to Apple Maps EV routing for Apple CarPlay.”

Chance Miller of 9to5Mac has more:

Last year, Ford began the process of delivering adapters that allow Mach-E and Lightning drivers to charge at Tesla Superchargers. Ford EVs include the CCS charging port, and this adapter converts that CCS connection into the North American Charging System (NACS) plug type.

And:

Apple Maps EV routing, however, hasn’t been updated with knowledge of this change. Currently, the feature works based solely on the plug type of the car itself. In this case, that means Apple Maps EV routing will only route Mach-E and Lightning drivers to CCS charging stations, as the feature has no knowledge of the fact that those cars can also charge at NACS stations.

Apple is playing catchup with rivals; EV routing on Google Maps is more developed, and Android Auto and Google-owned Waze also support EV routing.

If you own a compatible vehicle (Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning and Porsche’s Taycan), the Maps app will automatically show charging stops along your route, including information like charging time, expected time of arrival and more. As part of the EV routing setup process, Maps learns about your vehicle and its charger type, which lets it provide the best route while taking into account
