Apple finally admits that next-generation CarPlay is running late
Apple has confirmed that the next-generation CarPlay has been delayed but insists several automakers are still planning to adopt the feature.
Apple showed off the next generation of CarPlay, its feature that lets iPhone put a custom interface on a vehicle’s infotainment system, back in 2022. The first vehicles using the system originally called “iOS in the Car” were supposed to arrive in 2024, but Apple has now scrubbed mentions of the 2024 date from the CarPlay page.
Confirming the delay, the company issued a statement saying CarPlay 2 has not been pulled, insisting instead that the future remains in development.
Apple confirms next-generation CarPlay is running late
The company issued the following statement to MacRumors:
The next generation of CarPlay builds on years of success and insights gained from CarPlay, delivering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.
Aston Martin and Porsche are among the brands that have already previewed their implementation of the next generation of CarPlay. A recent leak showed that CarPlay 2 will let you add widgets to the Home Screen similar to the iPhone and iPad widgets.
CarPlay 2 integrates with in-car sensors and native vehicle features such as air conditioning and FM radio, with the user interface capable of taking over multiple screens in the car. Car brands have committed to supporting the next generation of CarPlay include Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and Volvo, according to Apple.
