If your AirPods Pro 2 occasionally emit an unprompted quiet chime while in their charging case, don’t worry—Apple says this is an actual feature rather than a bug.
The AirPods User Guide offers an explanation: the purpose of the chime is to calibrate built-in microphones and speakers.” To help ensure that your AirPods microphones and speakers are operating at their best, your AirPods may periodically play a quiet chime when they’re in their charging case,” it reads.
You can hear the strange beep in the video on this Reddit thread. So, it’s AirPods producing a faraway chime, not the charging case itself. Apple added this feature exclusively to the latest AirPods Pro 2 via the firmware version 7B19 in October 2024.

The company also doesn’t say whether the regular AirPods and AirPods Max might get this feature. Probably not, because this seems to be about “providing high-quality hearing test results,” and these new hearing health features only work on AirPods Pro 2.

How to take a hearing test with AirPods Pro 2
To take a hearing test in the Health app on your iPhone, wear your AirPods Pro 2, then open the Health app, select the Browse tab and choose Hearing. Scroll down to the section labeled Get More From Health and hit the option Take Hearing Test.
To take a hearing test from the AirPods settings, open the Settings app on your iPhone, touch your connected AirPods below your Apple Account name at the top and choose Take a Hearing Test in the Hearing Health section.
Apple notes that you can use your AirPods Pro 2 hearing test results to “make adjustments that match your unique ability to hear.”
