iCloud Passwords extension that brings iCloud Keychain auto-fill to Firefox for macOS now owned by Apple
As someone who has been using the Mozilla Firefox web browser on their Mac and Windows computers for nearly two decades, I’ve never been able to comfortably switch to Apple’s Safari web browser on my Mac. This is, in part, because of the higher quality extensions available for Firefox. But one gripe that I’ll admit is Safari’s deep integration with Apple’s Passwords app makes entering logins a breeze.
While Firefox can also remember passwords that you’ve created and auto-fill them, it’s worth noting that they don’t sync with Apple’s Passwords app, so the experience isn’t quite as seamless as it would be if using mobile Safari on the iPhone and then switching to desktop Safari on the Mac. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case today.
As first pointed out by MacRumors on Wednesday, Apple provides an extension for Firefox called iCloud Passwords that integrates directly with the Passwords app in macOS to warrant automatic filling of login credentials saved in iCloud from the Firefox web browser.
As a bonus, new passwords that you make in the Firefox web browser will also be added to the iCloud Keychain as long as you have the iCloud Passwords extension installed, which helps make the experience more seamless as you move from Safari on iPhone to Firefox on macOS, and vice-versa.
While an independent developer originally created the iCloud Passwords extension more than a year ago, the project’s GitHub page shares that, starting today, the project has been transferred to Apple, Inc., and the company is now the sole owner and maintainer of the iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox.
It’s worth noting that the extension doesn’t support Firefox for Windows because, obviously, the Passwords app and its subsequent user experience aren’t available on Windows systems. Supported macOS versions include Sequoia and Sonoma – the latter of which stores saved iCloud Keychain items in the Settings app rather than in a dedicated Passwords app.
I’m totally geeking out about this extension and look forward to seeing what Apple does with it following the company’s new ownership of it.
