How to know when your WhatApp message has been seen
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to check read receipts for WhatsApp texts, images, voice notes, files, and videos, so you can see the exact time your message was delivered, read, viewed, or played.
After sending a WhatsApp message, you might see a single (✓) or double tick.
Here’s what they mean:
- Single tick: The message has been sent from your end.
- Double tick (gray): The message has been delivered to the recipient’s phone or other devices where they have set up WhatsApp. In a group chat, a gray double tick appears when the message is delivered to all group members.
- Double tick (blue): The recipient has seen or read the delivered message. For group chats, it appears when all members have read your message. For voice messages, a blue microphone means the recipient has listened to your voice note.
These colored checkmarks and icons provide a quick way to see on the chat screen whether your message has been viewed. If you want to know the exact time it was seen, read, or played, follow the steps below to check the timestamps.
See the exact time when the recipient read your WhatsApp message or listened to your voice note
If the exact time isn’t shown, it means the event hasn’t occurred yet, or the Read Receipts feature is turned off (we’ll cover this later).
On iPhone
- Open an individual or group chat on WhatsApp.
- Swipe left on a text message, image, video, PDF document, or voice note. Alternatively, you can touch and hold the message and tap Info from the popout menu.
- The Message Info screen will display the Delivered and Read/Seen times. For voice messages, it also shows the Played time, which tells you when the recipient listened to your message.
On Android phones
- Open WhatsApp on your Samsung, Pixel, or other Android phone and go into a conversation.
- Touch and hold the sent text message, image, video, document, or voice note, and tap the info icon ⓘ from the top.
- The Message Info screen will display the exact Delivered, Read/Seen, and Played times.
See the read receipt for bundled images and videos
When you send multiple photos or videos in a single message or quickly one after the other, WhatsApp groups them into a bundle. If you touch and hold the bundle, you’ll only see options to forward, save, or delete all the images.
To check when each image or video was viewed, tap the bundle so all media is arranged in a vertically scrollable view. Now, touch and hold an individual image or video and tap More > Info on your iPhone or the info button ⓘ on your Android phone to know when the recipient viewed that particular media.
Reasons why you can’t see the read receipts on WhatsApp
If you’re unable to see when the recipient viewed your sent message, it might be due to one of these reasons:
- The recipient’s phone might be switched off, or they may have no Internet connection.
- The recipient has not yet opened the conversation to view your message.
- The recipient saw your message from their Lock Screen or Notification Center and then ignored it.
- Either you or the recipient have turned off the Read Receipts switch in WhatsApp privacy settings. Note: Turning Read Receipts back on doesn’t show the ‘Seen’ times for past messages. It will only work for future messages.
- For first-time WhatsApp messages, the blue double tick and read receipt time might not appear. It should start working for subsequent messages if the recipient responds.
- The date and time on your phone or the recipient’s phone are incorrect.
- The recipient has blocked you.
Read receipts are always enabled for group chats
Turning off Read Receipts in your WhatsApp privacy settings only turns it off for individual chats. Group chats remain unaffected, and you can always see which group members have seen your message and at what time.
Furthermore, the Message Info screen of a group chat shows the ‘seen’ time for a message even for members who have left the group. Of course, this doesn’t apply to messages sent to the group after the member has ceased to be a part of that group.
If you edit a WhatsApp message
Just like iMessage, you can edit sent messages on WhatsApp. And after you edit a message, the read receipt resets to three dots (…). It will show the new time once the recipient sees the edited version of your message.
Why is a single tick on WhatsApp not changing to a double tick?
A single tick on WhatsApp confirms that the message is sent from your end. It may not change to a double tick if the recipient’s phone is not connected to the Internet, powered off, or they have blocked you.
