tvOS 18.2 brings support for native 21:9 aspect ratio on projectors
Apple’s tvOS 18.2 software update allows you to natively play movies and shows in the 21:9 aspect ratio when your Apple TV is connected to a projector.
In fact, tvOS 18.2 automatically detects the best aspect ratio for your television or projector. If you have an anamorphic lens or your television’s aspect ratio is not detected, you’ll be able to manually choose from aspect ratio presets like 16:9, 21:9, 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K and 32:9, Sigmund Judge explained on X.
21:9 has a constant screen height, even when displaying other content with a lesser aspect ratio. Apple advertised this feature when it announced tvOS 18 at the WWDC23 in the summer, but it didn’t make the cut for the public tvOS 18.0 release. It will be available publicly when tvOS 18.2 arrives in December.
tvOS 18.2 brings a 21:9 aspect ratio for projectors
Compared with the 16:9 aspect ratio, 21:9 has less vertical screen space but a much wider field of view. It enables a constant display height—even when playing content with a lesser aspect ratio.
People often refer to 21:9 as an ultra-wide format because it offers a cinematic experience that immerses you in action and is especially suitable for movies shot in a CinemaScope format. These perks make the 21:9 aspect ratio particularly popular for enjoying movies on projectors and gaming on ultra-wide monitors.
Before tvOS 18.2, connecting your Apple TV to a 21:9 monitor via HDMI would result in a stretched user interface, even if you selected the 2560×1080 option.
You could only play 21:9 shows such as Drops of God in the 16:9 format cropped, with huge distracting black bars on the sides and bottom. Thankfully, tvOS 18.2 properly renders the tvOS user interface and content on 21:9 screens.
“Right now, if you have a scope cinema setup with blanking systems for the top and bottom of the projection screen, it’s super painful to have to navigate streaming apps search menus,” Sigmund explained. “This is just one of the issues this fixes.”
Snoopy is coming to your Apple TV screen savers
tvOS 18.0 brought new Apple TV features like InSight (similar to Amazon’s X-Ray feature), improved dialog enhancements, automatic subtitles, AirPlay spatial audio, live captions on FaceTime calls, SharePlay in the Music app and more.
Some tvOS 18 features didn’t make the cut for the initial release, like four new screen savers (including Snoopy) and support for robot vacuum cleaners like Roomba in the Home app (so you can manage them in one place and use them in automations and scenes). Instead, they’ll arrive with iOS 18.2 in December.
