Satechi unveils a tiny SSD enclosure and a pair of compact mobile hubs
Satechi has unveiled a compact NVMe SSD enclosure alongside a pair of mobile USB-C hubs which sport premium 3.5mm audio support and other perks.
The new Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure accepts M key M.2 2230 solid-state drives (SSD) up to terabytes with theoretical USB 3.1 Gen 2 maximum speeds up to 10Gbps. This works to about 1250 megabytes per second or about a gigabyte per second in real-life scenarios. You must bring your own SSD but don’t worry—swapping SSD modules is easy. No tools are required, and a silicone pin keeps the SSD secure during use, so you can upgrade or replace storage as needed.
The new mobile hubs come in two flavors: Mobile XR Hub with Audio features a premium 3.55mm audio port (more on that later) and Mobile XR Hub with microSD trades the audio port for a microSD card reader. They’re so compact they easily fit into any pocket or EDC, weighing less than an AA battery.
You can purchase Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure, Mobile XR Hub with Audio and Mobile XR Hub with microSD via the Satechi web store or its Amazon store.
Satechi Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure
The SSD enclosure has scratch-resistant tempered glass on the top, offering a glimpse of the electronic inside and tight tolerances. Some Dockcase hubs feature a similar see-through design; even though seeing internal components serves no practical purposes whatsoever, it’s damn cool. The enclosure ships with a braided USB-C cable in the box, which can hang on a lanyard when not in use.
A built-in fan (40-60 decibels) helps prevent thermal throttling and contributes to the lightweight design by eliminating the need for heavy cooling parts. This enclosure also works with PlayStation 5. In fact, you can connect it to any USB-C device, including laptops, phones, tablets, DSLR cameras, etc.
Satechi says the enclosure is especially suitable for mobile gamers, photographers and videographers. The rated 10Gbps speed is enough for shooting ProRes video with iPhone 15 Pros and later directly to the SSD. A handy write lock switch prevents accidental data deletion while protecting against malware.
Satechi Mobile XR Hubs
The new Mobile XR Hub with Audio and Mobile XR Hub with MicroSD let you choose between a premium 3.55mm audio port on the former and a microSD card slot on the latter. The audio port supports 2.1 channel output and wired headphones with built-in microphones so you can take calls, record voice memos, etc.
Maybe you’d like to use 3.55mm wired headphones to chat with friends while gaming on your iPad, Switch or similar device. Or perhaps you want to output sound from your handheld or iPhone to AV equipment in order to immerse yourself in rich bass and high-quality channel separation. In either case, the 3.5mm hub is for you.
Conversely, the SD card version is more suitable for people who want to transfer photos and videos from their DSLR to their computer and those looking to offload files to an SD card (with transfer speeds up to 33 megabytes per second) to free up storage space on their iPhone.
The remaining ports and features on both hubs are the same. You get an integrated USB-C connector to directly plug the accessory into a USB-C port of a host device and transfer data at up to 10Gbps, enough to move about a hundred videos in under 25 seconds. The hubs also draw power from a host device via this port.
There’s an additional USB-C port that supports 10Gbps data transfer and 4K resolution video output. When using the hub with your computer, you can connect an external monitor to this port. Satechi says this port also works with most XR glasses, including Viture, Xreal, and Rokid.
A second USB-C port is for passthrough power, with Power Delivery support for fast-charge support and safety features like overcharge protection. This port can keep your devices charged while you’re transferring data. It supports up to 27W for iPhones, 35W for iPads, 45W for Nintendo Switch and 100W for laptops. For example, you can plug your hub via the Power Delivery port into a power source like the MacBook Pro and your MacBook via the other USB-C port in order to charge your laptop while transferring data.
