Report: Apple is now directly selling ads in the News app
Apple has apparently begun directly selling advertising displayed in the built-in News app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac devices.
Axios reports that Apple has struck an agreement with publishers that will see it keep a 30 percent cut of the revenue from ads it sells while publishers get the remaining 70 perfect. The revenue share is reportedly only in place for in-article ads Apple sells directly. Ads that publishers sell themselves are not subject to these terms.
We don’t normally cover news concerning advertising, but this is one change that I’m rooting for. I open the News app every day to keep tabs on news that interests me. But ads on Apple News have been… disappointing to say the least. They look like those annoying clickbait-style ads chumbox ads at the bottom of articles.
Apple starts directly selling News app ads
“Apple has started selling its own advertising inventory for Apple News, two sources familiar with the effort told Axios,” writes Sara Fischer. “It’s pitching new ad units that it hopes will maximize revenue for itself and its publishing partners.”
Apple has been selling its own ad inventory on the App Store and in search, but has so far relied on third-party vendors to fill the free version of Apple News with ads. The effort includes new ad units for the feed and individual stories, banner placements, video ads across 17 different formats, including carousel ads that feature different products.
“Beginning next year, Apple will sell premium sponsorships of editorially curated content for relevant events, such as the Met Gala, the U.S. Open, and more,” Axios writes.
But will this result in better ads?
Axios said in July 2024 that Apple struck a deal with ad giant Taboola to power advertising for Apple News and Apple Stocks in every market available. Taboola is infamous for those irritating chumbox apps at the bottom of many news sites.
I’m guessing Apple has decided to take matters into its own hands, and I’m hoping to see a major change in ad quality on Apple News.
Apple News is only available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. If Apple News is unavailable in your country, you can use the regional settings trick to access it.
