macOS Sequoia 15.2: The weather forecast in your Mac’s menu bar
Apple’s macOS Sequoia 15.2 update conveniently puts glanceable weather forecasts for multiple locations to the menu bar of your Mac.
This is a convenient way to check the weather without opening Apple’s built-in Weather app. Unfortunately, it’s turned off by default and there’s no splash screen or any other indication that it exists, which could limit its usage.
To turn it on, click the Apple menu, choose System Settings and select Control Center in the sidebar. On the right side, scroll to the Menu Bar Only section at the bottom, click the menu next to Weather and select Show in Menu Bar. Doing so will enable the menu bar item for the weather forecast.
macOS Sequoia 15.2: Check the weather from the menu bar
Weather for the current location is depicted by an icon, like the sun, clouds, fog, snow, etc, with the current temperature displayed next to the icon. Clicking the menu reveals hourly temperature forecasts and weather conditions for other cities you have saved in the Weather app.
To add a city to the Weather app, type its name into the search field in the top-right corner of the window and press Enter. Then, select a matching city in the search results and hit the Add button next to the search field.
Up to five additional cities are listed in the menu in the exact same order as in the Weather app. Reordering saved cities in Weather will be reflected in the menu bar item. To do so, drag and drop your saved cities in the Weather app’s sidebar.
If you have more than five cities in Weather, the menu bar item will nest them under Other Locations. Just click this option to expand the menu with additional cities.
Choosing Open Weather will launch the Weather app. Clicking weather forecasts for other cities in the menu will open the Weather app with detailed information.
Coming to all users in December
This feature will be released for all Mac owners when Apple releases macOS Sequoia 15.2 in December. To try it before release, sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program at beta.apple.com for free using your Apple Account credentials, then enroll your Mac to receive macOS betas.
Before this change, the only way to add the weather forecast to your Mac’s menu bar was with a little help from third-party apps on the App Store which ship with a widget for the macOS menu bar.
