Creating new iCloud backups on iPhones and iPads powered by Apple’s iOS 8 software will no longer be possible, and the company will soon delete such backups.

Apple has informed some folks that iCloud backups will require iOS 9 or later. The change is coming on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. While affected devices will continue working as usual past the cut-off date, you will not be able to create new backups in iCloud. If your device runs iOS 9 or later, no action is required.

Apple will also delete all existing iCloud backups created on iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or older. Don’t worry, your app data, settings and uploaded files stored in iCloud shall remain intact. The upcoming change won’t impede the ability to create local backups of older iPhones and iPads on a computer.

iCloud‌ Backup to require at least iOS 9 from December 18

Nicolás Alvarez on X has shared an email blast from Apple’s support department, in which the iPhone maker explains that the reason for this change is to “more closely align with our published minimum software requirements.” As Nicolás pointed out, Apple migrated the iCloud Backup feature in iOS 9 to use its more modern CloudKit framework instead of the previous backup-specific system.

“To continue automatically backing up your devices to iCloud, update them and make sure iCloud Backup is turned on,” Apple advises. The message includes a link to a support page explaining how to use back up devices to iCloud in iOS 8 and earlier.
