Apple is acquiring Pixelmator Pro for macOS, Pixelmator for iOS and iPadOS and Photomator for iOS, iPadOS and macOS for an undisclosed sum.

“Today we have some important news to share: the Pixelmator Team plans to join Apple,” reads an announcement on the Pixelmator blog. The purchase price wasn’t disclosed, and the deal is subject to regulatory approval.

This isn’t one of those acquisitions where a company acquires an app for its technology, then kills it only to fold its features into its own offerings. In fact, the team ensures there will be “no material changes to the Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS and Photomator apps at this time.”

What a journey for Lithuanian brothers Saulius and Aidas Dailide, who never dreamed of this when they founded Pixelmator back in 2007.

We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, crafting our products with the same razor-sharp focus on design, ease of use and performance. And looking back, it’s crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to achieve over the years from all the way in Vilnius, Lithuania. Now, we’ll have the ability to reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world.

This is fantastic news! I’m a big believer in Pixelmator and have been evangelizing the Pixelmator apps since the original version debuted on the Mac on September 25, 2007. The team has since been on a relentless spree, issuing major updates regularly to improve Pixelmator in meaningful ways.

The best thing about the Pixelmator apps is that they’re always among the first to implement Apple’s latest platform features, like CoreML and Metal. That’s in stark contrast to companies like Microsoft and Google, which often take years to build support for new macOS features into their apps.

Pixelmator Pro has become a viable Photoshop alternative, and I’ve been using it daily. Pixelmator Pro is packed with advanced features, including vector drawing, Photoshop layer support, animations, AI effects and more. If you don’t need these capabilities, Photomator (formerly Pixelmator Photo) is easy to use and comes with an extensive collection of powerful color adjustments.

If you haven’t tried these apps yet, I wholeheartedly recommend downloading Pixelmator for iPhone and iPad, Pixelmator Pro for Mac and Photomator for iPhone, iPad and Mac to see what you’ve been missing all this time. If you’ve been on the lookout for a Photoshop alternative, Pixelmator Pro has everything you need for a one-time payment of $50, making it a far cheaper alternative to Photoshop.
