Rumor: Base iPad won’t be refreshed until fall 2025
Don’t hold your fingers crossed for an Apple Intelligence refresh to the base iPad arriving before the fall of 2025, claims a new rumor.
When it does drop, however, the next iPad should run Apple Intelligence, suggesting it’ll at least run an A17 Pro with eight gigabytes of RAM like the latest iPad mini.
Mark Gurman predicted in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that an eleventh-generation iPad would follow “later in the year” (2025) after the next iPhone SE with Apple Intelligence drops around March 2025.
Apple has not refreshed the entry-level iPad since October 2022. The entry-level tablet is usually refreshed yearly, but Apple probably had to rethink its plans after ChatGTP took the world by storm and caught it on the wrong foot.
Rumor: The base iPad is getting an Apple Intelligence upgrade in late 2025
Gurman writes that Apple ultimately wants to put Apple Intelligence on every device with a screen. Apple Intelligence requires at least an A17 Pro chip from the iPhone 15 Pros with eight gigabytes of RAM.
The entry-level iPad typically runs a few years old chip. The current tenth-generation iPad was released in October 2022 with an A4 chip that was two years old at the time. A 2025 iPad equipped could still use a chip that’s two years old—that is, the A17 Pro from 2023. We’d be very surprised if the next iPad ran this year’s A18.
The implication here is that if Apple wants to put Apple Intelligence in its every device equipped with a screen, they’ll all need to run at least an A17 Pro. Of course, Gurman could also be wrong and Apple might surprise us by announcing the next iPad soon with a press release, just as it did with iPad mini 7.
