iOS 18.1 brings two new toggles to the Control Center
Apple continues refining the iPhone’s redesigned Control Center, with the upcoming iOS 18.1 software update adding two new toggles.
The built-in Measure app now contributes to the revamped Control Center, with a pair of new toggles available in iOS 18.1, Measure and Level. The former launches the Measure app and the latter opens the Level feature within Measure.
If you have iOS 18.1 installed, invoke the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen, then touch and hold an empty area to reveal the Add a Control option at the bottom. Select this option to enter the Control Center gallery, where you can find the new toggles underneath the Measure heading.
Each of these controls has hidden options, revealed by touching and holding their tile. Confusingly, the shortcuts menu for both controls has the same options: Measure and Level, but there’s a good explanation for that.
iOS 18.1: Control Center gains Measure and Level toggles
It would be premature to call this a usability fail. Redundancy isn’t a bad thing because different people look for the same things in different places.
In this case, the Level feature is built into the Measure app, so Apple wanted to ensure and ensuring people can get to both features no matter their preference.
At least, that’s what usability research would have you believe.
Separate Wi-Fi, VPN, Satellite and AirDrop controls
Apple continues refining the Control Center which received its biggest redesign in iOS 18.0. For example, iOS 18.1 brings standalone Wi-Fi, VPN, AirDrop and Satellite controls that were only available as part of the Connectivity group before.
With this change, every toggle in the Connective group is now available as a separate control that can be independently added to the Control Center.
