Apple unveils M4-based MacBook Pro with nano-texture display option and more
The new MacBook Pro runs Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max chips and features Thunderbolt 5, an improved camera, a nano-texture glass option, etc.
sApple unveiled the upgraded M4-based MacBook Pro laptops with a press release published on October 30, following the announcements of a refreshed iMac all-in-one with M4 and a redesigned Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro earlier this week.
Thanks to Apple Intelligence, all MacBook Pros have 16 gigabytes of unified memory as standard, twice as before. The built-in FaceTime HD camera has been upgraded to an ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera that supports features like Center Stage (automatic cropping on video calls and Desk View (an overhead view of your desk).
The new laptops still come in 14 and 16-inch versions and start at the same respective $1600 and $2500 price points as before.
Apple updates MacBook Pros with M4 Pro, M4 Max, Thunderbolt 5, twice the RAM, nano-texture option, etc.
This is the first time Apple has offered a glare-reducing nano-texture display option for its laptops. If you’re going to be working on your MacBook Pro in sun-drenched environments or brightly lit rooms, a nano-texture glass cover is worth considering. Nano-texture cover is also available as an optional upgrade for the M4 iMac, Pro Display XDR, Studio Display and iPad Pro.
The MacBook Pros powered by the regular M4 chip only support Thunderbolt 4, with Thunderbolt 5 available on the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Thunderbolt 5 more than doubles transfer speeds up to 120 Gbps and is a great option for high-performance hubs, fast external storage and more.
Aside from Thunderbolt, all models feature an HDMI port capable of outputting 8K video at sixty frames per second, plus an SDXC card slot, a MagSafe 3 port for charging and a headphone jack.
The M4 and M4 Pro models offer support for two external displays without having to keep the lid closed, with the M4 Max models supporting four external displays. Thunderbolt 4 supports native DisplayPort 1.4 output over USB-C, with DisplayPort 2.1 available with Thunderbolt 5. Battery life is rated at 24 hours, like before. The Liquid Retina XDR display still offers 1000 nits of brightness for SDR content.
The M4-based models are 1.8x faster than the previous M1-based ones for tasks like editing gigapixel photos, with Blender rendering up to 3.4x faster over the M1 and 10.9x faster when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with Intel’s Core i7 chip.
The M4 Pro delivers more speed, twice as fast graphics as the M4, and a 75 percent increase in memory bandwidth. The M4 Max delivers even more speed by bringing even more CPU and GPU cores and a whopping half a terabyte per second of unified memory bandwidth. Even the Neural Engine in the M4 Max is three times faster than the M3 Pro. The M4 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory.
