Apple on Tuesday released an updated firmware for a small subset of available AirPods audio devices, including the AirPods Pro (1st generation), AirPods 3, AirPods 2, and AirPods Max (Lightning). That firmware has been dubbed version 6F21 and is a step above the version 6A326 firmware that came before it.

While Apple lists the software update on the company’s About firmware updates for AirPods web page, the change log isn’t particularly descriptive about what this update offers to end users. Instead, it takes the less-than-informative “Bug fixes and other improvements” route, categorizing this update as a minor one.

When it comes to bug fixes and improvements for Apple’s AirPods audio devices, what these updates contain is anybody’s guess. It could mean improvements to audio quality, to Bluetooth connectivity, to gesture recognition, to battery life, or to device compatibility. Without further elaboration, there’s no good way to know for certain.

If you have any of the aforementioned AirPods models, and you want to find out what firmware they’re running and whether you need to update them, then you can simply make sure they’re connected to your iPhone and navigate to Settings → Bluetooth and tap on the information (i) button:

How to check AirPods firmware version.

From here, you can see what firmware your device is running, and if it’s anything besides 6F21, then you can proceed with updating. Worthy of note, however, is that you can’t manually kickstart the updating process. According to Apple, AirPods software updates happen automatically when the follow criteria are met:

  • AirPods are connected to power and charging
  • AirPods are within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is in range of and connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access

While this seems like a straightforward process for most Apple device users, it’s worth noting that even users of competing platforms use Apple’s AirPods audio devices given their sound quality and advanced active noise cancellation features. These users may need to visit an Apple Store to get their firmware updated, but we don’t recommend wasting your time on a trip for minor “bug fix” updates that don’t offer any significant changes.

Has the firmware on your AirPods Pro (1st generation), AirPods 3, AirPods 2, or AirPods Max (Lightning) updated to version 6F21 yet? Let us know in the comments section down below.
