Apple released iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 for public consumption on Monday, October 28. To download and install an over-the-air update, navigate to General > Software Update in the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad or the System Settings app on your Mac and follow the instructions.

Apple Intelligence is compatible with the iPhone 15 Pros, the iPhone 16 lineup, and Mac and iPad models powered by the Apple M1 chip or newer. To use Apple Intelligence, the Siri language and device region must be set to U.S. English and your device must have at least 4 GB of free storage. Apple Intelligence is currently in beta, has a wait list and must be manually turned on in Settings after updating your device.

Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1

The first batch of Apple Intelligence features available with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 includes writing tools to proofread, summarize or rewrite any text in the built-in apps like Messages to be friendly, professional or concise.
In the Photos app, you can use a Clean Up tool to remove distracting objects with seamless background replacement. You can create new animated slideshows with music from quick descriptions like “Images of me and my son at the beaches, summer vibes.” Natural language search in Photos makes it a cinch to find a needle in the haystack by using actual descriptive phrases instead of keywords, such as “kids laughing at swings” or “couple dancing at wedding.”

A new focus mode, Reduce Interruptions, leverages AI to intelligently allow important notifications to interrupt you while silencing those deemed unimportant. Every focus mode now has a related toggle to enable the same AI-powered notification triage, labeled Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing.

The Mail has been revamped with a priority inbox that surfaces time-sensitive messages at the top of your inbox. Messages are automatically summarized in the inbox view instead of showing the first few lines, like before. Incoming emails are automatically filtered and grouped into Transactions, Updates and Promotions.

AI-powered smart replies in the Mail and Messages app understand the context of the message, providing one-tap replies instead of canned responses.

Siri enhancements in iOS 18.1 include a new glow animation and interface and the ability to type to Siri faster by double-tapping the screen’s bottom edge. Siri uses Apple’s large language model, so it should understand you better than before, especially if you mumble stubble through words.

The assistant is now much better at keeping the context of the conversation, which permits you to ask follow-up questions. Siri in iOS 18.1 was trained on Apple’s extensive product documentation, allowing the assistant to answer questions about how to find a certain feature or do something on your device.

iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 release notes

iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 also bring a bunch of under-the-hood tweaks and feature changes that amount to a better experience.

The Control Center has a button to reset the layout to factory settings. All the toggles in the Connectivity group are now available separately, including Wi-Fi and AirDrop, and there are new controls available for the Measure app.

iOS 18.1 also brings a fix for random iPhone 16 freezes and other patchea detailed on Apple’s support page. For information about what features are available in which countries, peruse Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 18 Feature Availability page.

Installing the above updates will also enable new hearing health features on AirPods Pro 2—including Hearing Aid, Hearing Test and Hearing Protection—that require AirPods firmware 7B19. Don’t worry, your AirPods will update their software automatically so long as you leave the earbuds in their charging case and connected to your paired iPhone (which must be connected to the internet).
