If you need high-performance connectivity for your devices, Ugreen’s new Revodok Thunderbolt 5 docking station/hub has you covered.

Ugreen, a Chinese consumer electronics brand which builds chargers, hubs and other accessories, recently went public. Building on the momentum, the company unveiled at this year’s IFA show in Germany the latest entrant in its prestigious Revodok series of hubs, the Revodok Thunderbolt 5 Docking Station.

The Revodok Thunderbolt 5 Docking Station supports data transfer speeds of between 80 and 120Gbps. The Thunderbolt 5 standard is capable of 80Gbps of bandwidth in both directions (upstream and downstream, each 80Gbps).

But thanks to Thunderbolt 5’s Bandwidth Boost mode, this hub can go all the way up to 120 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth. These speeds make the new Revodok more than suitable for professional video editing and content creation.

The docking station supports three dedicated monitors (in addition to the computer’s built-in display) on Apple silicon Macs powered by the M1 Max, M2 Max, and M3 Max chips and Windows PCs. In dual-display mode, you can drive two external monitors (plus the built-in display) in 6K resolution at 60Hz on Macs with M1 Pro/Max, M2 Pro/Max and M3 Pro/Max chips.

If you connect just one external display to your Revodok Thunderbolt 5 Docking Station, you can run it in 8K resolution at 60Hz on Windows or 6K resolution at 60Hz on your Mac, with options for mirrored or extended modes. Other supported resolutions in single-display mode include 4K at 30Hz and 60Hz, 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz and 120Hz, 1080P at 60Hz and 120Hz, and 720p and 480p at 60Hz.

It won’t do 4K at 120Hz or 240Hz, a bit strange given there are plenty of 120Hz monitors available (perhaps not, if you consider its target market is content creators, not gamers). We’ve contacted Ugreen to ask whether a firmware update might unlock those refresh rates. We’ll update the article if we receive a response.

We’ve counted as many as thirteen ports on an accompanying press image Ugreen sent us, including four Thunderbolt 5/USB4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (5Gbps), two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (10Gbps), one USB-C port with 20 Power Delivery and 10Gbps data transfer, one Ethernet port supporting 1GbE and 2.5GbE, plus SD card and microSD card slots (transfer speeds to be confirmed).

Pricing and availability

The Revodok Thunderbolt 5 Docking Station will be available to order later in September. Don’t worry; we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, feel free to check out the Revodok docking stations on Ugreen’s website and its Amazon store.

If high-performance docks aren’t your cup of tea, you’ll want to check out the new Ugreen Uno series of desk chargers, hubs, powerbanks and cables styled like groovy robots with digital faces expressing charge status with emoji.

It’s still early days of Thunderbolt 5

One thing to note is that we’re in the early stage of the Thunderbolt 5 adoption. Very few Thunderbolt 5 devices are currently available, but rest assured they’re coming. New standards take some time to catch on, as has been the case with prior Thunderbolt revisions. But Ugreen seems well embarked on that trajectory with a high-end Thunderbolt 5 dock offering superior connectivity and performance.

What perks does Thunderbolt 5 bring?

Intel announced Thunderbolt 5 in September 2023 with up to 3x more bandwidth. The standard is compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt and USB, and Ugreen is among the first companies to adopt it. Apple helped popularize Thunderbolt and its Mac computers will also adopt Thunderbolt 5 in the future.

Thunderbolt 5 boosts data throughput to 80-120Gbps and is compatible with prior Thunderbolt and USB-C versions. In comparison, the current Thunderbolt 4 standard maxes out at 40Gbps. Thunderbolt 5’s increased bandwidth enables support for monitors with more pixels and higher refresh rates than before.
