The iPhone 16’s touch-sensitive Capture button should work through Apple’s cases

The iPhone 16 is expected to gain a dedicated touch-sensitive Capture button for photography that should, however, work through Apple’s silicone cases like a charm.

Apple’s engineers may have devised a new design specifically optimized for the rumored Capture button on the next iPhone. Instead of a cutout, the button will work through Apple’s case, although skin contact is required for it to work.

According to a sketchy rumor by leaker Duan Rui, only Apple’s silicon case will allegedly integrate the Capture button in this way. All of the third-party iPhone 16 cases we’ve seen thus don’t have a cutout for the Capture button. If Rui is correct, Apple’s silicon case could offer this feature exclusively.

Duan acknowledged as much, saying in a post on X that Apple’s official cases won’t have the cutout because they are expected to sport “an integrated design” that the leaker claims won’t affect the normal use of the Capture button.

iPhone 16 cases and the Capture button

The Capture button is expected to use capacitive technology to recognize finger gestures such as swiping. It would work similarly to the iPhone’s touchscreen, where skin contact is required to sense finger capacitance.

Perhaps Apple will use an ultra-thin silicone covering for the Capture button or a conductive material that mimics the skin’s conductivity? We saw a similar solution employed on winter touchscreen gloves which let you interact with your iPhone.

How the Capture button might work

The Capture button should work seamlessly across multiple modes of operation. A soft press would invoke autofocus, with a hard press simulating the shutter button (this is how many premium DSLRs work). But it wouldn’t stop there. Swiping horizontally is thought to zoom in and out—and there may be other gestures.

The button should be located on the right side of the device, below the Power button, to encourage folks to shoot video in landscape orientation. Mark Gurman said on Bloomberg that the Capture button could be exclusive to this year’s iPhone 16 Pro models before presumably trickling down to all iPhones over time.
