Satechi’s inconspicuous passport cover has you covered with Find My tracking and separation alerts should you leave it behind
Satechi’s new passport cover packs convenient technologies such as Find My tracking, RFID blocking, Bluetooth 5.2 and wireless charging.
On September 6, Satechi unveiled a new accessory at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, dubbed Vegan-Leather Passport Cover with Find My.
It looks like any regular passport holder or wallet you can find on Amazon. Look closer, however, and… it still looks like a regular passport cover that flips open like a book to reveal a passport holder and four slots for your cards.
What you can’t see is the tech packed inside. For starters, there’s Bluetooth 5.2 for Find My network compatibility: You can add this accessory to the Find My app on your iPhone (it appears under the Items tab) and track its location.
Built-in Find My and RFID protection
Bluetooth advertises the presence of the passport cover to nearby Apple devices, which pick up the signal and report its current location to the Find My network.
Should you lose or misplace your passport cover, you can fire up the Find My app to pinpoint its location on the map and navigate there. Find My’s separation alert feature ensures you’ll receive a notification if you leave your passport cover behind.
In an RFID skimming scam, a nearby thief can steal your card number when you’re using the card at a contactless payment terminal. That won’t be an issue with the Satechi passport cover, thanks to built-in protections against RFID skimming.
A built-in 5-month battery
Powering all these technologies is an integrated battery that Satechi claims lasts five months. You won’t need to replace the battery when it discharges because it’s rechargeable. Simply drop your passport holder on a MagSafe, Qi or Qi2 wireless charger like Satechi’s 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 charging stands.
The accessory is made from vegan leather, but it doesn’t automatically make it a scratch magnet like Apple’s failed FineWoven cases. I inquired Satechi about this and was assured the material is scratch-resistant. We’ll report how vegan leather holds up in real life after spending some hands-on time with the passport cover.
Pricing and availability
You can order the Vegan-Leather Passport Cover with Find My from the Satechi website for $60. It will be available to purchase via Satechi’s Amazon store later.
