Prepare to pay to share your Disney+ password

Like Netflix, Disney+ is now cracking down on password sharing by charging a fee to continue using the shared account.

People using shared Disney+ accounts will see a message stating that “This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Household for this account” and be logged out. The account holder will need to pay extra to share their Disney+ password.

However, Disney+ has limited password sharing to just one person. That’s right, you can’t pay for, say, three additional persons who will get to use your account. Disney would rather those folks sign up for their own subscription.

Another restriction is that Disney+ subscriptions purchased as part of Disney’s Hulu or ESPN bundle are not eligible for paid account sharing, and neither are subscribers billed through Disney’s partners.

Disney+ launches paid password sharing

Having experimented with a so-called paid sharing program over the summer in a limited fashion, it’s now gone live for all Disney+ subscribers in the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Like Netflix, which requires you to pay for additional users to share your password with, Disney+ now wants you to pay a fee to continue using the shared account

“Your Disney+ subscription is meant to be used within your Household, which is a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there,” Disney notes.

“Account holders who want to add someone outside of their Household to their Disney+ subscription will be able to do so with the Extra Member add-on.”

How to buy an extra member on Disney+

To share your Disney+ password with someone who doesn’t live in the same residence as you, buy an Extra Member by selecting your profile in the app, choosing Account, and selecting Extra Member in the Plans and Billing section. An Extra Member gets their own profile in your account, settings and password, but they can’t stream on more than one device at a time.

An Extra Member’s price is $7/month for the ad-supported Disney+ Basic plan and $10/month on the Disney+ Premium tier. Given the ad-supported Disney+ Basic plan is $8/month, wouldn’t it be better for an extra member to sign up for their own ad-supported account for an extra $1/month. No, because the ad-supported Disney+ Basic plan is increasing to $10/month on October 17, 2024.

Disney notes that the system might warn you that your account is not part of the household when streaming on the go. In that case, you can choose the I’m Away From Home option to continue streaming or choose Update Household if you’ve recently moved and need to reset the household location for your Disney+ subscription. Disney’s support page has more info on how the whole system works.
