Need a reason to upgrade? Netflix is ending iOS 16 support, requiring at least iPhone XS
Netflix could be about to sunset support for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, meaning its mobile streaming app will no longer work on some older iPhones and iPads.
Netflix could be the reason you upgrade your iPhone because code spelunkers have discovered certain strings in the streaming app, strongly suggesting that it might soon stop working on Apple’s iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 operating systems.
The iPhone X (2017), iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (2017), first-generation iPad Pro (2015), and fifth-generation iPad (2017) can continue using the app though it’ll stop receiving updates with new features and fixes and eventually deprecate.
None of the above devices is compatible with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, which Netflix will soon require as the minimum. At least Netflix fans stuck with outdated Apple hardware now have a good excuse to upgrade.

According to 9to5Mac, some iOS 16 users reported seeing an alert saying, “We’ve updated the Netflix app! To use the latest version, install iOS 17 or later.”
MacRumors is unsure which version drops support for these devices or when it might launch. It’ll probably be sooner than later because relevant strings are already present in the current Netflix code. Our guess is that the change will come in the first update following the release of iOS 18 on Monday, September 16.
It’s normal for apps to remove support for outdated devices over time, but this move seems premature as iOS 16 was Apple’s current software just two years ago. However, given that some of the incompatible devices are eight years old, Netflix may have detected security or performance issues that contributed to its decision.
If you use Netflix on an older iPhone powered by iOS 16 compatible with iOS 17, you can upgrade to iOS 17 to continue using the Netflix app. Of course, incompatible devices can always fall back to Netflix’s web interface in a browser.
