The upcoming iPhone 16 Pros should boost their cameras to let you capture 4K video with double the frame rate at 120 frames per second (fps).

The rumor comes from 9to5Mac, which claims to have learned details from “reliable sources.” Shooting in 4K resolution at 120fps will reportedly require external storage connected to your iPhone 16 Pro. This doesn’t surprise us because the iPhone 15 Pros require external storage to record 4K ProRes video at 60 fps.

Apple’s Camera app should let you pause and resume video recording in a single session. Other tidbits include automatically removing wind noise for videos, new Photographic Styles that better preserve skin tones and spatial photo capture.

When will Apple bring 8K video capture to the iPhone?

The 9to5Mac report also hints at other camera improvements that are said to come in this year’s iPhones, like 8K video capture. “We’ve also seen evidence that Apple has tested 8K video filming with the iPhone 16 Pro”” it reads.

I think 4K video capture at 120Hz, 4K QuickTake and 8K video capture are pretty much guaranteed at this point, given how Apple has used advanced camera features (among other things) to create a clear delineation between standard and Pro models.

Besides, the upcoming A18 Pro chip should provide plenty of power for these features. However, this isn’t even about sheer processing power because even the current A17 Pro is fast enough to drive 8K video capture.

An 8K image has around 35 megapixels, and the main rear camera has 48 megapixels, so it has enough pixels for an 8K video capture. However, the iPhone 16 Pros are expected to boost the ultra-wide camera to 48 megapixels, so both wide and ultra-wide cameras would have enough resolution to shoot 8K video.

Filipe Espósito, 9to5Mac:

It’s unclear whether Apple has decided to enable 8K on production devices, especially as the telephoto camera would still be limited to 4K. Apple might save 8K for next year’s iPhones, which are rumored to have a new, higher resolution zoom lens.

The iPhone 6s, released in 2015, was the first model to bring 4K video capture, limited to 30fps. Two years later, the iPhone X enabled twice the frame rate for 4K shooting, from 30fps to 60fps. All iPhones released onward have been able to shoot 4K video at 60fps, including the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.

QuickTake video is getting upgraded to 4K

Lastly, 9to5 has learned that QuickTake video should get a much-needed resolution boost from 1080p to 4K. QuickTake lets you start recording video without switching out of Photo mode. I rarely use it because of its limited resolution, but I may change my mind if QuickTake gets a 4K resolution upgrade.

The report corroborates an earlier rumor about support for the JPEG-XL format for up to 3x smaller files. 9to5Mac has also learned new details about the supposed touch-sensitive hardware button dedicated to camera functions, which is said to be called “Camera Button” instead of “Capture Button.”

While on the Lock Screen, a simple press of this button would automatically launch the stock Camera app or your designated third-party camera app. Once in the stock Camera app, swiping the button would zoom or adjust exposure; a light press for autofocus; a harder press for snapping a photo (like on high-end DSLRs).

We’ll soon find out whether 9to5Mac’s source can be trusted: Apple is holding its iPhone 16 event on Monday, September 10, at 10am PT / 1pm ET.
